Cycling

This round shows you both sides of the southern Upper Middle Rhine Valley. You will pass so many castles that you have to be careful not to miss any. Another experience are the two ferry crossings.

Since the tour is designed as a loop, you can start it from any point. There are several train stations on both sides of the Rhine. In this case it starts in Oberwesel. From there you cycle downstream to St. Goar. You have a beautiful view of the Loreley Rock on the other bank. After you have taken the ferry to St. Goarshausen, you drive south along directly below the famous rock. You will pass a special feature among the castles on this route: Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, which is located on an island in the middle of the Rhine.

Behind Lorch you can enjoy a new riverside cycle path, which is probably the most expensive cycle path in Germany. This takes you to Rüdesheim, where you take the ferry to Bingen. You pass the mouth of the Nahe into the Rhine and soon pass the famous Mouse Tower. On the way back you might discover one or two castles that you missed on the other side of the Rhine.

View of the Loreley Rock

Highlight • Viewpoint

Between the Mouse Tower in Bingen and the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, 29 castles, palaces or castle ruins tell of the important history of the Middle Rhine Valley. Kings, princes, counts, bishops – they all built their castles on the Rhine. The 132 meter high Loreley rock is right in the middle. It is not for nothing that the Loreley Valley is now one of the most popular excursion destinations in Germany. Here you can find Rhine romanticism in its purest form.

View of Katz Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

On the right bank of the Rhine, high above St. Goarshausen rises Katz Castle. It is privately owned and can not be visited. The Rheinsteig passes by.

St. Goar–St. Goarshausen Ferry

Highlight (Segment) • Rest Area

Between Bingen and Koblenz, the main route of the Rhine Cycle Route runs on the left bank of the Rhine. But since a visit to the Loreley simply belongs to a Rheinradtour, you can comfortably take the ferry from St. Goar on the left bank of the Rhine to St. Goarshausen on the right bank of the Rhine.

Beautiful Rhine Cycle Route (Lorch - Rüdesheim)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Just don't cycle in the height of summer. You'll get grilled here. Shade is in short supply. Warning: The cycle path ends about 600 m before Rüdesheim, then you have to cycle on the main road! I find it annoying that Komoot is joining in the propaganda of "Germany's most expensive cycle path". The measures included the expansion and renewal of the B42 and measures to support the railway line!

38.7 km

Here the Nahe flows into the Rhine after 125 kilometers. From the bridge you can say goodbye to the river that you have followed for so long on the bike path. At the same time, you can enjoy the beautiful view that offers you here: the view of the Mouse Tower, Ehrenfels Castle and the shipping traffic on the Rhine is absolutely worth seeing.

Rheinstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

The picturesque location of the castle Rheinstein enchanted in 1823 the Prince Frederick of Prussia, who also bought the castle promptly. At that time, the castle was little more than a dilapidated ruin, but after several years of reconstruction, the Prince could move into his domicile. The castle was then built with careful preservation of the medieval fabric to a romanticized residential castle.

This form is preserved to this day and can be visited. The castle now houses a museum and an adjoining restaurant. In addition, the view from the wall and from the towers down to the Rhine Valley is simply picturesque. If you can not get enough of the castle, then you should also look at the accommodation offers.

You can find all information about opening times and entrance fees at burg-rheinstein.de.

View of Burg Reichenstein

Highlight • Castle

The former Raubburg Reichenstein, above Trechtingshausen, is on the left bank of the Rhine. The castle is home to a museum of valuable art treasures.

On the left bank of the Rhine, above the village of Rheindiebach, the Fürstenberg castle ruins rise. The ruin can be explored and is located on the famous Rhein-Burgen-Weg. A detour is worthwhile.

View of Burg Stahleck

Highlight • Viewpoint

Stahleck Castle rises on the left bank of the Rhine high above the beautiful wine town of Bacharach. From the courtyard of the Staufenfeste there is a fascinating view of Bacharach with its defensive towers, the former city fortifications, and over the Rhine Valley. The Stahleck is now a youth hostel.

July 17, 2023,Bingen - St.Goar - St.Goarshausen - Rüdesheim
First cycled the new bike path - opened about a week ago - from Lorch to Rüdesheim. Super, nice and smooth, right on the Rhine with a view of the river and the opposite side. The piece from St.Goarshausen to Kaub is so-so, from Kaub very nice to drive on.
I did the bike tour with a guest of our …

Enjoyed the Rhine on both sides by bike. Yes, it has been possible since last summer, and the cycle path on the right bank of the Rhine from Kaub to Rüdesheim is perfect, before that it was so-so. You can cycle. The right bank of the Rhine is ideal for sun worshippers, with only minimal shade. And always right along …

In the most beautiful sunshine, once again drive on both sides of the Rhine. The cycle path on the right bank of the Rhine was opened about 5 weeks ago. This is really a highlight, as you always have a full view of the Rhine (disadvantage: absolutely no shade). Unfortunately, the section around the Lorely falls under the category "dangerous …

Nice bike ride along the Rhine. About 65% on the road, but the beautiful view of the landscape, the many castles and small towns makes up for it 🤗

Showing Translation

The left side of the Rhine is definitely nicer for driving. The way back runs exclusively along the road. But you often have a nice view. It was stupid that Komoot switched itself off shortly after the ferry crossing to St. Goarshausen and I didn't notice it at first. Hence the straight stretch through the mountain near the Loreley.

Beautiful landscape but terrible cycle paths. They aren't roads 😖

From Bingen to the Loreley and back via St. Goar / St. Goarshausen. A very nice, approx. 60 km long round trip through the most beautiful part of the Middle Rhine Valley.
