Hiking

The peak of Néouvielle is an easily accessible summit of the reserve of the same name. Culminating at 3,091 meters above sea level, it dominates numerous lakes alongside several other peaks also exceeding 3,000 meters.

The start is at the paid parking lot at Lake Orédon. The path quickly climbs through a magnificent forest which leads to the Laquettes, a new body of water nestled in the heart of rocky mountains. You follow its banks, discovering all its facets, until you reach Lake Aubert and its dam.

From then on, the slope becomes more pronounced until reaching the summit. This section indeed includes a steep drop in altitude which takes place on terrain that has become exclusively rocky. As you advance, the panorama of the Néouvielle reserve opens up more and more.

In the last portion of the climb, the route winds over large blocks of rock. Follow the cairns and the markings carefully to stay on the right path. The last meters are the steepest, but arriving at the summit provides a spectacular view. You overlook a beautiful part of the reserve including Lake Cap-de-Long and the famous Lakes of Aubert and Aumar. Not far from you, stand the peak of the Trois Conseillers, the Turon du Néouvielle as well as the Campbieil. To find the starting point, all you have to do is take exactly the same path as on the way out.

Lac d'Aubert dam

Highlight • Other

The Aubert dam retains the waters of the eponymous lake and thus makes it possible to constitute a reserve managed and monitored by EDF.

The stone dike is a beautiful work that blends nicely with the surrounding natural setting. You can cross it and enjoy one of the most beautiful views on the southern slope of the Néouvielle massif.

These are groups of small ponds and pools irrigated by winter snow and overflow from the surrounding lakes. However, these wetlands regularly dry up in summer.

The last meters of the climb are on a scree, stay vigilant to stay on the path.

Les Laquettes

Highlight • Lake

The laquettes are located below Lake Aubert, at an altitude of 2,085 meters. These are groups of small ponds and pools irrigated by winter snow and overflow from the surrounding lakes. However, these wetlands regularly dry up in summer. If California has its “thousand lakes” on the John Muir Trail, we have the lakes on the GR 10 and it is no less magical.

Lake Orédon

Highlight • Lake

Lake Orédon is the most accessible of all since a car park has been installed on its banks. If this causes large crowds in high season, the lake of Orédon remains one of the most impressive of the Néouvielle massif.

With the mountains that throw themselves steeply into its waters, Lake Orédon looks like a fjord that makes it very different from all the other bodies of water in the reserve. To have !
