Embark on a moderate 19.0 miles (30.5 km) gravel cycling adventure through Acadia National Park, gaining 1855 feet (565 metres) over approximately 3 hours and 22 minutes. This route offers a unique car-free experience on historic carriage roads, featuring a crushed rock surface and gentle grades. You will cycle past serene Witch Hole Pond and Eagle Lake, enjoying expansive views of Frenchman Bay and Cadillac Mountain. The journey provides a peaceful atmosphere, allowing you to appreciate the natural beauty and the distinctive stone-faced bridges along the way.

The carriage roads are car-free, ensuring a tranquil cycling environment away from vehicle traffic. Remember that these paths are multi-use, so you must yield to hikers, pedestrians, and horses to ensure everyone's enjoyment. Hulls Cove Visitor Center

Highlight • Rest Area

The Hulls Cove Visitor Center in Bar Harbor, Maine, is the primary visitor center for Acadia National Park and a great place to start your visit. Before you go, check the seasonal hours on the park's website. There is a covered pavilion in the parking lot to gather information and catch the Island Explorer bus, which is a great way to get around the park during the busy summer season. There are 52 stone steps to the visitor center, where you can purchase your entrance pass, consult with rangers for trip planning, explore the Artist-In-Residence program's art, and visit the gift shop for souvenirs. If you need an accessible entrance, follow signs to the rear of the building.

Eagle Lake Carriage Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Bike racks are available outside the Visitor Center, which has bathrooms, a gift shop, and a place to refill water bottles. You can walk your bike on paved paths to the West of the parking lot and visitor center where there are sweeping views of Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island. The sun rises on the summit of Cadillac Mountain before any other land in the U.S., and in the summer every morning hundreds of visitors purchase tickets to drive up the Park Loop Road to watch the sunrise. If you bike up for the sunrise you don't need a ticket, but be sure to wear good reflective gear and lights and expect to be accompanied by a conga line of tourists in SUVs.
