This route was planned by komoot.
The trailhead for the Rabaçal, Risco, and 25 Fontes route is accessible by car, with a parking lot available. From the parking area, you can either walk down a paved road for about 2 km to the Rabaçal Cafe, or take a convenient shuttle bus service that operates this section, saving you a steep walk.
The trail is generally classified as easy to moderate. While much of it follows relatively flat levada paths, there are sections with steep steps, particularly the descent and ascent to 25 Fontes. Some parts can be narrow with drops, so it might not be ideal for those with a strong fear of heights. Families with younger children or those new to hiking should be prepared for these more challenging sections.
While often described as a circular route, parts of the trail, especially to the 25 Fontes and Risco waterfalls, are typically hiked as an out-and-back. Some sections may also be designated as one-way for safety due to the trail's popularity and narrowness. The overall Komoot route is designed as a circular path, but be aware that you might retrace steps to see specific highlights.
The terrain is varied, primarily following 'levadas' – narrow irrigation channels with paths alongside them. You'll encounter paved roads at the start, natural winding paths through the ancient Laurisilva forest, and sections with steps. Be prepared for wet, muddy, and potentially slippery surfaces, especially after rain, so waterproof footwear is highly recommended.
This route is famous for its stunning waterfalls and lush forest. Key highlights include the impressive Risk waterfall and the iconic 25 Fontes (25 Springs) Waterfall, where numerous streams cascade into a lagoon. You'll also pass by Viento Lagoon and traverse the beautiful Levada do Alecrim.
Madeira's climate allows for hiking year-round. However, the best time is generally during the spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is mild and the vegetation is vibrant. While rain enhances the waterfalls, it also makes the trails wetter and potentially more challenging. Arriving early in the morning, regardless of the season, is advisable to avoid crowds.
This is one of Madeira's most popular hikes, so it can get very crowded, especially after 10-11 AM when organized tours arrive. To enjoy a more peaceful experience, it's highly recommended to start your hike as early as possible in the morning, ideally before 9 AM.
While dogs are generally allowed on many levada walks in Madeira, it's important to keep them on a leash. Given the narrow and sometimes crowded sections of this particular trail, and the presence of steep drops, it might be challenging for some dogs or their owners. Always ensure your dog is comfortable with such conditions and that you can maintain control.
No, you do not need a specific permit or to pay an entrance fee to hike the Rabaçal, Risco, and 25 Fontes trail, as it is freely accessible within the Madeira Natural Park. However, there might be a small fee to use the toilets at the Casa do Rabaçal Café & Fountain.
Given the varied terrain and potential for wet conditions, sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential, preferably waterproof. Bring rain gear, as weather can change quickly. A headlamp or flashlight can be useful for any darker sections or tunnels, though less common on this specific route. Plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection are also recommended.
Yes, this route extensively uses sections of official trails. You'll be hiking along parts of PR 6 - Levada das 25 Fontes, PR 6.1 - Levada do Risco, PR 6.3 - Vereda da Lagoa do Vento, and PR 6.2 - Levada do Alecrim, among others.
Well this was bloomin beautiful! We got there for 8:30 to avoid the tourists (I say, as a tourist...) but it sure worked! We barely saw another soul for a few hours. This walk was based off a combo of guide book, another komoot user's walk and our own little additions, including a lil correction to account for a one way levada section - which might not have been there before. It loops you back to the same waterfall a couple of times but you get totally different views both times. By doing a loop rather than the traditional out and backs you mostly also avoid tourist tours. The only bit that was especially busy was 25 Fontes (which was nice... But honestly, we preferred the first view of Risco waterfall anyway)! There's a few ways you could turn back early to shorten this if you wanted to. I like that it stops at the cafe about 1/3 and 3/4 through the walk hehe.
Beautiful route, with impressive vegetation, waterfalls, levadas and breathtaking views😊
Great hike along the many attractions and beautiful vantage points, the km was a bit understated, on our tour it was 12km, but it was actually 16.5km. We also met tourists with sandals, but still highly recommended
easy hike in shady surroundings along lush vegetation. but very busy and little view.
All highlights included. Levada hike to the waterfall, then one floor down. On other levadas, over bridges, on beautiful sections, with stairs in all directions, to the valley of the 25 springs. Oh well! We didn't find the tunnel(s).
A nice, recommended hike, but also quite demanding, steep steps up and down.
