The South Mountain is simply awesome! This massive mountain in south Phoenix is one of the largest urban parks in the country. Many locals come here to enjoy the unique nature. And yet the area is not overcrowded. Quite the opposite: the terrain is extensive, wild and pristine.

On this almost 28 kilometer long loop you get a good overview of this great region. The trail program includes: National, Telegraph Pass and Desert Classic. Look forward to a great mix of easy and technically challenging trails as well as magnificent views.

It starts at the Pima Canyon Trailhead. For the first few meters you warm up comfortably on a gently rising gravel road. But after just two kilometers it's over. It gets steeper and the terrain will demand a lot from you. On the National Trail you climb bit by bit, overcoming high steps and lots of natural rock features.

The higher you go, the more impressive the vision is. After almost eight kilometers you reach the Buena Vista Lookout. Here you should treat yourself to a break and enjoy the wonderful panorama. From here you can see the entire metropolis. In the foreground you can watch the hustle and bustle at the airport and in the middle you can see the skyscrapers.

The route then continues undulating until you reach the entrance to Telegraph Pass. This downhill is short, but it's still really fun. Choosing a good line is half the battle. And of course: the better your driving technique, the more fun you will have! At the end of the tour, on the return trip to the trailhead, you explore the popular Desert Classic Trail, where things get relaxed. The path is sandy, smooth and easy to navigate.

National Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Wow, what a trail. If you are looking for a great workout, try to climb all sections of the National Trail starting at Pima Canyon Trailhead. The climbing is really tough, but a lot of fun if you like technical, challenging climbs. Also amazing as an out and back ride to the Buena Vista Lookout.

Telegraph Pass Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

If riding from the bottom up, the trail is rideable for around half of it. It then gets rocky and steep, from here carrying or pushing your bike to the road/saddle is the best option.
The trail is multi use so it can get busy with hikers.

Desert Classic Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Fun Flow!!!
Really fun and easy for the beginners, but it also can be fun for some more experienced riders. It has a few really rocky sections where it is no fun on Hardtail, but don’t let that discourage you. There are a few more technically difficult sections for the more experienced riders, but you can either ride around or walk them if your a beginner. The are also no major climbs and descends on this trail, there are rolling hills. The trail is a blast, for new mountain bikers and the experienced. Don’t forget to be properly equipped for that Arizona heat!

Pima Canyon Trailhead

Highlight • Trail

The Pima Canyon Trailhead is one of the most popular trailheads for the South Mountain Preserve. There are a bunch of different trails that start/finish in the parking lot (including the National Trail), and there are a bunch of different loop and route options starting from here. There are restrooms, trail maps, and adequate parking at this trailhead.
