Vereda Lagoa do Vento e Levada do Alecrim — Circular route PR6.3 on Madeira Island

Beautiful path on the Levada do Alecrim, the descent to Lagoa do Vento is quite steep, not for those with knee injuries.

If you hike a lot and seriously, I would skip this one. crowded, sneakers, vans that throw non-hikers out at the very last opportunity and there are much nicer tours. Even early in the morning, not possible

The Levada Alecrim is the highest level of four levadas that run one above the other and originate here in the valley. A great tour that I would do again anytime. It is advisable to start early as the car park is always very full and it is difficult to find a spot on the side of the road. First it goes very steeply down an asphalt road. There is a minibus on this route to Rabacal. Finally, after about 1.5 km, turn right into the forest. The path starts directly with many steps and this stretches almost all the way to the levada. There is a view of the Risco waterfall from a large rock to the left of the path. The path along the levada is very easy and you arrive at the same level as the car park. Our fear that we would have to climb another 1.5 km was, thank God, gone. Unfortunately, Komoot saves the time incorrectly on all of our hikes. We were on the road for about 2 3/4 hours with breaks.

When it's wet, sturdy shoes and surefootedness are essential. We didn't think the hike itself was that great, as it mostly goes through the forest and doesn't offer much of a view of the surroundings. In summer, it's probably extremely crowded. And, very important: people with knee problems should not do the hike, as it involves a lot of steps.

We chose or put together our first tour here on the island from the Kompass hiking guide Madeira Tour No. 47+49 (due to poor visibility) The flora and fauna were spectacular. It gives the impression of hiking 'in the tropical, fairy-tale jungle'. If you love levada hikes, this is the place for you. Unfortunately, it was a bit too wet for us that day and the view was mostly overcast.

Great route, sturdy shoes and surefootedness as well as a head for heights are an advantage 😉

Today our last day on Madeira and a nice walk from the plateau Paul that Serra. The drive to it alone is unbelievably impressive. High peaks and then the plateau (flanked by the now inevitable windmills). From there walk along the Levada Alecrim (a Levada that flows through a drier area) with crooked trees that provide the necessary coolness and shade. Descended to the Lagao Vento where many were shooting tiktok and insta pictures. There are trout swimming in the lagoon.... We rested there for a while before diving into the forest, on our way to the Postal Florestal Rabaçal. A nice forest hut with cake, drinks and friendly staff. And then up the mountain again, that was just as tough..... But "my" Hibernian had two big on so he was happily on his way! (I heard him singing further up the mountain....😁) All in all a wonderful walk to say goodbye to this truly beautiful island in the Atlantic Ocean.
