Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Sámara and Montaña Reventada Loop trail start, and is there parking?

The trail officially starts from the Mirador de Samara, which is clearly marked and easily accessible. There is parking available at this trailhead, making it convenient for hikers arriving by car.

What is the terrain like on this hike?

The terrain is predominantly volcanic, featuring lava gravel paths and areas where Canary pine trees grow directly in lava beds. You'll experience a transition from below the tree line to open volcanic landscapes, offering diverse scenery throughout the loop.

What can I see along the route?

This route offers incredible panoramic views of Teide National Park, including the majestic Pico Teide and Pico Viejo. You'll also pass by Montaña Reventada and enjoy a View of La Gomera and El Hierro on clear days. The trail showcases distinct volcanic landscapes, from pine forests to vast lava fields.

Is the Sámara and Montaña Reventada Loop suitable for beginners?

While the trail is rated as 'moderate' with a distance of nearly 12 km and about 390 meters of elevation gain, it is generally accessible for those with a reasonable level of fitness. Some sections involve short, steep climbs. Hikers should be prepared for sun exposure as there is little shade.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn often offer the most pleasant temperatures. Due to the high altitude (around 2000 meters above sea level), the sun can be intense, so adequate sun protection is crucial regardless of the season. Hiking at sunset is also a popular option for stunning views.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for this trail?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Sámara and Montaña Reventada Loop. It is located within Teide National Park, which is free to enter and explore.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Sámara, Abeque, and Sendero Teide-Pico Viejo–Mirador de las Narices del Teide trails, offering a varied hiking experience.

Is the Sámara and Montaña Reventada Loop dog-friendly?

No, dogs are generally not permitted on trails within Teide National Park, including the Sámara and Montaña Reventada Loop. This regulation is in place to protect the park's fragile ecosystem and wildlife.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the high altitude and lack of shade, it's essential to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Layered clothing is also recommended to adapt to changing temperatures. Sturdy hiking shoes are advisable for the volcanic terrain.

Are there any specific recommendations for hiking this loop?

Many hikers recommend doing the loop clockwise for optimal views, especially if you plan to catch the sunset over the distant islands. Starting early in the day can also help avoid the midday sun. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.

What are the regulations for Teide National Park that I should be aware of?

As the trail is located within Teide National Park, it's important to respect park regulations. This includes staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife or plants, and taking all your trash with you. Camping is generally restricted, and fires are prohibited.

April 14, 2024, Sendero Abeque (S-32) y subida a la Montaña Reventada — circular desde el Mirador de las Narices del Teide

Make sure to make the tour available offline (no reception at the starting point). Without a sat nav/GPS, kilometers 8 to 10 don't work - no visible paths, no markings. But with GPS it's no problem.

The hike mainly goes through the lava fields below Pico Viejo or Pico del Teide. But you also touch the pine forests that lie slightly lower down. Particularly bizarre are the individual young, light green pine trees that slowly conquer the dark lava fields. If you look at the sea, you can see La Gomera (at least the tips for us) and El Hiero. A little further north there is La Palma. It's a great and impressive landscape and it's very impressive to hike around the lava fields!

Route description: Circular route from the Sámara viewpoint through the "Cuevas Negras" caves, in the Teide National Park in Tenerife This circular trail begins at the foot of the Sámara volcano and offers splendid panoramic views of several volcanic cones. In the initial and final part of our excursion, which begins at the "Mirador de Sámara", you can contemplate the beautiful Canarian pine forest, an effective colonizer of recent volcanic terrain. Among the flora, in addition to pines, broom, laburnum and pterocephalus lasiospermus are common. As for the fauna, it is easy to spot the kestrel and the Canarian cockerel. As we climb in altitude we proceed through a spectacular landscape, almost devoid of vegetation, where we can admire the different volcanic rocks and pyroclastic rocks (ash and lapilli) of the ancient eruptions of the "Pico Viejo" and its cones. In the middle of this breathtaking landscape are the caves "las Cuevas de Chahorra" or Cuevas Negras", which are not signposted, to find them you have to leave the path a bit, but they are difficult to spot and locate thanks to some cliffs of ancient fluid lava that indicate their position. These caves have a cave habitat with very particular conditions and limited access, blocked by bars, to avoid the deterioration of their interior. Directions to follow: We park at the Mirador de Sámara and take the S-13 path (Sámara). As soon as we take the path we immediately find the first geographical signs that allow us to consult the routes in the area. From this point we turn right always staying on the S-13 path, which goes slightly uphill and after about 700 meters at the fork we turn right, moving onto the S-32 path (Abeque). After about 3 km of walking we take the signs on the left for the S-9 path (Teide - Pico Viejo - Mirador de las Narices del Teide), we follow it for about 700 meters and then take the signs on the left for the path of the caves "Cuevas Negras" (S-38). In this area our circular route already begins the descent in the direction of the Sámara volcano and at the fork we find the two paths that take us back to the starting point, they are both signposted S- 13 (Sámara), we take the one on the right. And we return from our wonderful excursion crossing the beautiful Canarian pine forest, an effective colonizer of recent volcanic terrain.

This circular walk connects the marked trails of the Teide National Park nºs 13 (Samara) 38 (Cuevas Negras) 9 (Teide) 32 (Abenque) It is possible to climb to the top of the Samara Volcano a short distance from the Samara viewpoint. But we've done this before, so we followed trail 13 (Samara) in the direction of Teide and Pico Viejo, which initially climbs gently up the Volcán de la Botija, between scattered pines growing in the volcanic terrain. We ascend to the conical silhouettes of Teide and Pico Viejo. As we go up, the landscape becomes more sensational. We leave the pine trees to continue through lava flows ejected by the volcanoes in various eruptions. The nearby volcano Montaña Reventada is responsible for some of these lava flows. We walk through authentic volcanic terrain, through lava flows and relatively recent volcanic scoria, not yet colonized by vegetation. The way back goes via sendero 32

This great volcano tour at an altitude of 2000 m starts at the very popular Mirador de Samara. However, most visitors only walk the few meters to the nearby Montana Samara, some take the small 5 km circular route (which is also worth it), but almost nobody takes the long 9 km circuit to the Cuevas Negras. It's all great to walk (spa park paths!), apart from a 100 m long crossing of a magma river that is not "sandal-friendly". First through the pine forest, then over the tree line and then through ash fields and magma. Great, and the fantastic views of Gomera and La Palma.

The route is easy to walk, the ground is a bit soft in places. We were surprised by the icy wind coming from the north side. It's better to pack a windbreaker.

Another facet of the superb Teide park! Here it is black and green that dominates with always the blue of the sea and the sky! Great views! To do on the last day in the park to end with an easy hike! Please note the parking lot is tiny, either arrive before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. and watch the sunset
