Running

The Chelan Lakeshore Trail offers a challenging jogging experience with constant panoramic views of Lake Chelan and the towering North Cascade mountains. As you jog this difficult 14.0 miles (22.5 km) route, you will gain 1983 feet (604 metres) in elevation, typically taking around 2 hours and 58 minutes to complete. The path winds along high bluffs and deep creek beds, providing glimpses of craggy, snow-capped peaks and beautiful waterfalls. In spring, the trail comes alive with abundant wildflowers such as Balsam Root, Lupine, and Indian Paintbrush, adding vibrant color to the natural scenery.

Planning your visit requires careful consideration, as the trailhead is only accessible by taking the Lady of the Lake ferry. This unique access means you need to coordinate your trip with the ferry schedule. While it's an excellent early-season trail, often snow-free by April, be aware of limited shade and potential heat during summer months. Spring and fall generally offer the best conditions for your jog, but always be cautious of rattlesnakes and ticks.

This route culminates in Stehekin, a remote town that can only be reached by foot, ferry, or float plane, adding to the adventure. Lake Chelan itself is notable as the third deepest lake in the United States, providing a dramatic backdrop to your entire journey. The trail's unique access and stunning natural features make it a standout option for those seeking a challenging and memorable jogging experience in the region.

Stehekin

Highlight • Settlement

Nestled deep into the North Cascades National Park lies the tiny town of Stehekin. It is less than 100 miles from the Canadian border and only accessible by foot, boat or seaplane. It is eleven miles from the Pacific Crest Trail on a dirt road. Two shuttle companies run at least four times a day to get you here.

Most hikers send their final resupply package to Stehekin. The small town has a friendly post office, an excellent restaurant, a small store, hotel, campground and a laundromat with showers. You should definitely stop at the bakery outside of town and get some delicious cinnamon rolls – my personal favorite. The shuttle stops there, too.

The Chelan Lakeshore Trail is uniquely accessed by ferry. You'll need to take the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan or Field's Point to reach the trailhead, most commonly at Prince Creek. The route concludes in the remote town of Stehekin, which is also only accessible by foot, ferry, or float plane.

When is the best time of year to jog this trail?

The trail is often snow-free by April, making it an excellent early-season option. Spring and fall generally offer the most comfortable conditions. Be aware that the route has limited shade and can become very hot in the summer, with temperatures potentially reaching the 80s.

What is the terrain like on the trail?

This is primarily a singletrack trail with a gently rolling profile, featuring moderate ups and downs. While the overall elevation gain is minimal to moderate, there are sections that descend to cross creeks and then climb again. You might encounter occasional rock hopping for seasonal stream crossings and tree falls, especially in early spring.

What kind of scenery can I expect along the way?
