Mountain biking

This route on the Via delle Prealpi, which connects Lake Garda to the Cansiglio forest, starts from the Sant'Osvaldo refuge, in Farra d'Alpago, in the heart of the Cansiglio plain, easily reachable by car.

The MTB tour, also suitable for less experienced people, allows you to explore some magical places in the Cansiglio forest. The circular route winds mainly on dirt roads immersed in the serenity of mountain pastures and on forest roads where it is possible to encounter herds of deer that populate the forest.

From the refuge, you head towards the Giardino Botanico Alpino Giangio Lorenzoni, following a dirt road which, with unforgettable ups and downs, leads to the Valmenera plain, one of the three large depressions that characterize the area. This place is recognized as one of the coldest in Italy, with temperatures that can drop to -40°C during the harshest winters.

Through the scattered houses of the Cimbrian villages and a spectacular forest road immersed in the woods, where it is possible to admire the unique colors of the forest during the foliage, you return to pedaling parallel to the provincial road, up to the Osteria plain.

After traveling along the provincial road for a short stretch, you enter the woods again, passing next to the Pich village. Before closing the ring from the shelter you started from, you pass through an area where a NATO base once stood.

Valmenera Plain

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

Up here, through the Campon valley, a tongue of the ancient and vast Piave glacier reached; the deposits of gravel and silt testify to this. Continuing downhill, the road runs alongside young fenced-in reforestations and reaches the Piano della Valmenera, one of the three great depressions that characterize the area. At the beginning of the plain, on the left, you can see a blade, the largest in the Cansiglio. It hosts a unique vegetation of marsh plants for this area. Some species of water birds stop near the blade during their migrations: mallards, teals, garganeys and lapwings. From here the route borders the "Pian di Landro-Baldassare" Nature Reserve. The vast Piano della Valmenera is an area of undoubted beauty, where it is not uncommon to encounter animals in the wild: foxes, deer, fallow deer, roe deer and birds of prey such as the buzzard, the black kite and the kestrel.

Former NATO base

Highlight • Historical Site

This is an area where a NATO base once stood. When I was a child my parents took us on holiday to the Alpago mountains and we often went to Pian Cansiglio, where they told me about this secret underground base that kept many missiles hidden. They also told me that the cows that could be seen near the base were fake, perhaps made of cardboard or wood.
