Ouse Estuary Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

Between Newhaven and Seaford is the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve which is home to a wide variety of birds, insects, plants and amphibians including the internationally protected Great Crested Newt.

Cutting across the nature reserve is an excellent tarmac traffic-free cycle path which is part of National Cycle Network route 2. The scenic trail is an excellent alternative to the busy A259, which runs alongside it.

So scenic when you look over to your right of the meandering Cuckmere River meeting the sea. Can get pretty windy around here!

Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters Cliffs

Highlight • Natural Monument

A busy hub for people coming to walk and admire the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs. There is a cafe, toilet block, ice cream van (in summer), shop, visitors’ centre and lots of indoor and outdoor seating.

Beachy Head Road

Highlight • Cycleway

A very nice smooth section of road that rolls gently downhill through a series of flowing bends, with some amazing views over the coast, lighthouses and downs at the eastern extent of the South Downs National Park.

As the open road winds through the cliff top headland, take a moment to pull over and stop on the grassy verge. This spot offers fabulous views over "The Sunshine Coast" and the High Weald, giving you a sense of how high up you are.

Eastbourne boasts one of the highest sunshine records in the UK, earning it the nickname "The Sunshine Coast."

Friston Hill Road Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

If it wasn't for the (often very impatient!) traffic in peak times and on sunny weekends, a nice and challenging road climb kicking up to 16% ..or thrilling descent coming down it into East Dean.

For anyone preferring to reach Friston pond away from the traffic, there is actually a small path parallel to this. Just turn left at the bottom of the climb (Upper Street) and right again after about 100 metres (see komoot.com/highlight/3802315). You will have to push a lot of it but at least you can take your time! :)

Jevington Village

Highlight • Historical Site

Nestled amidst the South Downs, Jevington is a quaint village that forms a part of both the South Downs Way and the Wealdway long-distance trails. The area is steeped in history, with Neolithic burial mounds dotting the nearby hills, and the village itself holds ties to the Roman era. By the 18th century, Jevington had gained notoriety as a hub for smugglers.

At the village's core is The Eight Bells country pub. For a sweet treat, don't miss the chance to savor the local specialty: Jevington proudly claims the birthright of banoffee pie.

Lewes to Ringmer Traffic-Free Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This traffic-free bike path avoids the main road and gives you a great view of the Lewes Downs. It provides an excellent link between Lewes and Ringmer.
