Gravel riding

The itinerary I propose is a circular tour of the Cansiglio, a pre-Alpine plateau between the provinces of Belluno, Treviso and Pordenone.
The tour takes place mainly along the paths of a majestic beech and fir forest, which is why I recommend using a gravel bike or a mountain bike.
You can leave your car in one of the two car parks located near the La Crosetta tavern, but not in the restaurant's car park (signposted), which is reserved for customers only.

We start from via del Cansiglio, the main state road that crosses the plateau; after a few kilometers of smooth descent, follow the track that leads you to the left along the climb that leads to Mount Pizzoc. Immediately climb sharply for a couple of kilometers before leaving the asphalt and entering the Taffaril forest road.
The majestic beech trees that surround you, commissioned by the Republic of Venice, date back to the sixteenth century; impossible not to be amazed by their beauty.
Continuing along the track, around kilometer 27, you will come across the Cansiglio man museum: inside it contains documents and testimonies of the presence of man in Cansiglio and his relationship with the plateau.

The Cansiglio forest does not end here. Follow the track and enter the centuries-old beech trees again along the Candaglia forest road, a magnificent beaten track closed to car traffic.
Cycling among the trees is relaxing, time flies. Soon without realizing it you will arrive at a metal barrier, beyond which you will be able to rejoin the starting point.

Highlight • Restaurant

Osteria La Crosetta offers home-made cuisine favoring 0 km products.

Taffarel Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The fascinating Strada del Taffaril is a comfortable forest track with a mostly flat course and short ups and downs. It is surrounded by a beautiful beech forest whose origins date back to 1548, when the Republic of Venice established the "Gran Bosco de Reme di San Marco" here, whose tall trees were reserved for the production of oars for the galleys.

Also indicated as path F, it connects the road that goes up to Monte Pizzoc to the town of Campon; it winds between bumps and valleys, alternating slight slopes with uphill stretches. After passing the start of the path that dips into the Vallorch valley, it crosses the route of the Alta Via nr. 6, the detour to Malga Mezzomiglio and crosses the Pian Parrocchia - Campo di Mezzo nature reserve (characterised by the mixed beech and silver fir forest) before descending onto the northern side of Col Mazzuc.

Museum of Man of Cansiglio

Highlight • Historical Site

The "Anna Vieceli" Regional Museum of Man in Cansiglio and Cimbrian Ethnographic and Culture Center (MUC), owned by Veneto Agriculture, collects documents and evidence of the presence of man in Cansiglio and his relationship with the plateau.

Inside, the activities and places of the presence of the prehistoric communities of nomadic hunters are illustrated. A section is dedicated to paleobotany and the findings of Palughetto which preserves the remains of the oldest conifers in Europe. The most conspicuous collection of the Museum offers some historical documents relating both to the Venetian domination which lasted almost four centuries (1420-1797), and to the presence of the Cimbri ethnic linguistic minority, with panels and cards on forestry activities, the preparation of coal and processing. of timber. There are numerous tools on display that were used to transform the beech trees of the centuries-old Cansiglio Forest into the famous oars that moved the great Venetian “galleys”.

The story of the arrival and life of the Cimbrian community, which arrived in Cansiglio at the end of the 18th century from Roana (Asiago plateau, VI), is told through the historical images of the villages, the faces of the "Cimbri boxers", the tools used once and still today for the processing of wood and some tools produced by the Cimbri themselves such as the famous "scatoi", circular containers for storing cheese and food.

A mezzanine in the attic also houses a library dedicated to the Cimbrian population commissioned and organized by the Cimbri del Cansiglio cultural association.

Trail Reviews

Nicola
November 5, 2024, Giro Gravel in Cansiglio

Mainly dirt road on well-beaten gravel and without major difficulties. The only two real climbs are on asphalt and are one at the beginning of the tour and the other at the end. Highly recommended from spring to autumn. I would only avoid it in winter and immediately after a period of heavy rain.

a semi-sudden day off ... and off we go ... (even if I took the wrong road and shortened the tour by 5 km) .... to be redone very soon .... beautiful beautiful .... the colors, the silence, the peace ...

Ring tour on the Cansiglio starting from the Crosetta pass. The tour is covered entirely on a forest road. The play of colors and the intense scents of the undergrowth make the atmosphere of this magical forest. From top Pizzoc you can enjoy a 360° panorama that ranges from the plain to the sea, up to the imposing Dolomite peaks such as Marmolada, Pelmo, Antelao.

Beautiful ride feasible with Gravel but certainly more comfortable with amortized mtb

Today we had to interrupt the tour before tackling the last climb to help a mtbiker, crossed by pure chance, who got sick, we hope he can recover soon❤️‍🩹. Congratulations to the Belluno helicopter rescue that intervened in record time, while we struggled a little to alert them, given that even in 2022 the Cansiglio is practically devoid of cellular coverage 🤔
