The trail is generally considered easy to moderate. The initial quarter-mile walk to the waterfall viewpoint is flat and easy. However, the descent into and ascent out of the canyon involve steep, narrow, and uneven sections with switchbacks and stairs. These parts can be challenging, especially when wet, but are manageable for most hikers.
The first quarter-mile to the waterfall overlook is flat and suitable for strollers. Beyond this point, the trail descends steeply into the canyon with uneven terrain, making it less suitable for strollers. While some sections might be challenging for very young children, many families find the overall trail manageable due to the presence of switchbacks and stairs.
You'll experience diverse scenery, including a 200-foot waterfall, best viewed in winter and spring. The canyon itself is a lush, moss-covered forest of tall Doug firs and cedars, with an undergrowth of ferns, salal, and huckleberries. Along the Big Quilcene River, you'll see turquoise water, rapids, and calm pools.
The trail can be hiked year-round. However, the waterfall is most impressive during the wetter seasons (winter and spring) when water levels are highest. The moss-laden forest remains vibrant even in winter, offering a green escape.
Yes, the Falls View Canyon Trail is dog-friendly. Please ensure your dog remains on a leash throughout the hike to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Falls View Canyon Trail. It is free to visit, making it an accessible option for a short hike or a break during a road trip.
The trail starts at the Falls View Trailhead, which is located near the Falls View Campground. There is parking available at the trailhead.
Highlights include the Falls View Trailhead, a scenic Viewpoint overlooking the waterfall, and the immersive experience of hiking along the Falls View Canyon Trail itself, which descends into the canyon and follows the Big Quilcene River.
The Falls View Canyon Trail is a lollipop loop. It begins with an out-and-back section to the waterfall viewpoint, then descends into a loop section within the canyon, and finally returns via the initial path.
The trail can be narrow and uneven in sections, particularly during the steep descent and ascent into the canyon. Some areas may be eroded and rooty. In wet weather, the footing can become very slippery, so hiking poles might be helpful.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Falls View Canyon Trail #868, Falls View Loop Trail #848, and other segments identified as Falls View Canyon Trail and Falls View Loop Trail.
