The Cappella San Domenico – loop from Breglia is an easy and undemanding hike that typically takes about 47 minutes to complete. This duration allows for enjoying the views without rushing.
Yes, this trail is considered easy and undemanding, making it perfect for beginners, families, and those looking for a relaxing outing. It's suitable for all skill levels.
The trail starts on a wide cart-track from Breglia, initially level and then gently uphill through a chestnut wood. After the Cappella San Domenico, it continues through woods to a large pasture. To reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Breglia, there's a cobbled staircase. The loop returns via a paved lane or by rejoining the initial fork.
The primary highlight is the spectacular panoramic view of Lake Como from the belvedere near the Cappella San Domenico and View of Lake Como. From here, you can see Bellagio, Menaggio, Mount San Primo, and more. There's also a Bench With View of Lake Como offering great vistas.
While the trail is generally accessible, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially when passing through pastures or near religious sites like the Chapel and Sanctuary. Ensure your dog is comfortable with varied terrain, including cobbled sections.
The trail is enjoyable in most seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage, while summer provides warm weather for enjoying the views. Winter can be beautiful, but check for snow or ice conditions, especially on higher sections or cobbled paths.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Cappella San Domenico – loop from Breglia trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Parking is available in Breglia, which serves as the starting point for the loop. For public transport, you can take a bus to Breglia. A Roman tomb from the 6th century can be found near the bus stop, adding a historical touch to your arrival.
Breglia is a small village, and while specific cafes or restaurants directly at the trailhead might be limited, you can find options in nearby larger towns around Lake Como. It's advisable to check local listings or pack snacks and drinks for your hike.
Yes, sections of this route also pass through parts of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa D13N, Via dei Monti Lariani (Bocchetta di Nava - Luina), and the sentiero della croce, among others. This offers opportunities to explore further if you wish to extend your hike.
Beyond the stunning natural scenery, you'll encounter the historical Cappella San Domenico. The path to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Breglia features fourteen granite stations with copper paintings depicting the 'Mysteries of the Rosary.' Additionally, a 6th-century Roman tomb is located near the bus stop in Breglia.
From the place where the beautiful votive shrine enriched with interesting frescoes is located, it is possible to admire a wonderful panorama.
Small but very fine tour at Breglia. From the car park next to the church of San Gregorio, walk gently up the Way of the Cross to the pilgrimage church of Madonna di Breglia, past an old lime kiln and to the chapel of San Domenico. The vantage point here is my personal favorite highlight in the region: A fantastic box seat with a view of the lake with the distinctive Bellagio peninsula, the Lecco estuary, and the great Monte Crocione above. Here you can sit and enjoy the wonderful panorama for a long time. The way back to Breglia is via a shady forest path that is easy to walk on.
After the second tour, we decided to join this small circular route. In my opinion a must if you are in the area anyway. The view behind the chapel is breathtaking! 🌳🌲🌿🏞️🥰🌲🌳🍀 On the way back we had to realize that the path - which we had derived from the GPS data of a travel guide - no longer existed or had been relocated. If you follow the main path, you can get back to the parking lot safely and easily.
Finally, a little lap around Breglia. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate anymore.
