This route was planned by komoot.
The trail officially starts from Alagna Valsesia. You can find parking options within Alagna Valsesia, which serves as the main access point for the Val d'Otro area. Specific parking details can often be found on local tourism websites like visitvalsesiavercelli.it or visitmonterosa.com.
The route offers a diverse landscape. You'll encounter a mix of paved paths and stone steps, particularly the steep Olterstiga, as you ascend from Alagna. These transition into dirt trails winding through dense beech and conifer forests. Further up, the trail opens to the Otro plain with unpaved, natural, alpine, and gravel sections.
This loop tour is rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage. Key highlights include the Caldaia d'Otro Waterfall, the Abandoned Manganese Mine, and especially the exceptionally well-preserved ancient Walser Villages of Val d'Otro like Follu, Weng, and Scarpia. These villages offer a unique 'living museum' experience.
While the trail is generally accessible, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially when passing through the Walser villages and near livestock. Be prepared for varied terrain, including stone steps, which might be challenging for some dogs. Always carry water for your pet.
The best time to hike this route is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally favorable, and the trails are clear of snow. Hiking in winter is possible but requires appropriate gear and experience due to snow and ice conditions.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Discovering the Val d'Otro loop tour. The trail and the Walser villages are freely accessible to the public.
The trail is rated as moderate, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. While some sections are medium-easy, the presence of steep stone steps (Olterstiga) and varied terrain means it might be challenging for very young children or those not accustomed to hiking. Families with older, experienced children should be fine.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other notable trails. You will find parts of the Monte Rosa tour stage 4, Sentiero Italia - Tappa E47, and the Via Alpina Blue D15 along the way.
Yes, the rustic Rifugio Zar Senni in the Walser village of Follu provides a notable stopping point for hospitality and refreshments. It's a great place to experience local culture and take a break during your hike.
As the trail gains altitude and opens up to the Otro plain, you'll be treated to stunning panoramic views of surrounding peaks. These include Corno Mud, Tagliaferro, Cima Carnera, and the majestic Monte Rosa, offering breathtaking alpine scenery.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential. Dress in layers, as weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Bring sufficient water, snacks, sun protection, and a map or GPS device. Trekking poles can be helpful for the steeper sections.
Annual family mountain trip 👪 with a stop at the Zar Senni refuge in Follu
There is public parking on the main road when you reach Alagna Valsesia, free of charge is limited, it is recommended to go early to find parking. There are two departures for the path, we take the first steeper one to return from the quieter one. Well marked route with nice directional signs. Absolutely recommended stop at the boiler and the mine. Attention to the boiler, when we went there was ice. As soon as you arrive in Val d'Otro there are several very beautiful mountain pastures with even a picnic area where you can stop to eat in the sun. The only note: there is a public toilet but it is locked, I don't know if for maintenance or not, when we went it was not usable. Also recommended at the end of the tour to stop in Alagna for a ride and maybe warm up in some bar.
