Embark on a moderate road cycling adventure with the Olde Stage and Nelson Road loop, a route that spans 29.3 miles (47.2 km) and climbs 1564 feet (477 metres) over approximately 2 hours and 26 minutes. You will experience varied scenery, from open fields with horses and cows along Nelson Road offering expansive views of the Foothills and Lefthand Canyon, to the peaceful Cottonwood Trail winding beside a creek. The climb up Olde Stage Road provides a rewarding vista over northeast Boulder between the hills, making the effort worthwhile.

This challenging loop demands very good fitness due to its steep climbs, with some sections of Olde Stage Road reaching a 13.4% grade. While much of the route is paved, be prepared for crushed gravel sections, particularly on the Cottonwood Trail, which makes a gravel bike or a road bike with wider tires ideal. You should also be mindful of moderate car traffic on shared roads and the potential for deer sightings, especially on Olde Stage Road.

This route stands out for its blend of rural tranquility and urban connectivity, starting conveniently from Pearl Street. As you follow Lefthand Creek, you might spot local wildlife, adding to the natural charm of the ride. The diverse terrain and scenic overlooks make it a notable option for cyclists looking for a substantial workout combined with picturesque views in the Boulder area.

East Pearl Street

Highlight (Segment) • Settlement

The east end of Pearl Street before you reach the Pedestrian Mall has seen a lot of growth these last few years. There are great restaurants and coffee shops as well as shopping. There are several large outdoors stores from well-known brands, including Patagonia, Arc'Teryx, Backcounty, Stio, and Mont Bell, all within a few blocks of each other. Boxcar Coffee is an excellent place for a post (or mid) ride latte and pastry, and its right next to Rapha, a high-end cycling clothing shop that also serves coffee.

Backside of Olde Stage (Lefthand to summit)

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The climb up backside of Olde Stage Road coming from Lefthand looks steeper than it is as you approach from the bottom, although its still pretty steep! The top of both this climb and Olde Stage Road is marked by a group of mailboxes and a large metal rooster statue. If descending this side of Olde Stage, this is a fun zippy descent down to Lefthand Canyon where you can either continue up the canyon toward Jamestown and Ward, or continue the fun descent down to highway 36.

Lefthand Canyon (36 to Olde Stage)

Highlight (Segment) • Canyon

The initial section of Lefthand Canyon from 36 is easier than the upper sections and a great place to warm up the legs for some climbing! As you follow Lefthand Creek, crossing over it a few times, be on the lookout for deer and other wildlife (especially on the descent!), along this scenic road.

Nelson Road (63rd Street to Highway 36)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Nelson Road between 63rd Street to Highway 36 takes you over rolling hills past fields with horses and cows, with great views of the Foothills and Lefthand Canyon if headed east to west. You also ride past the Table Mountain Antenna Fields Sites, which are two impressive twin antennas sitting just west of 63rd street.

Foothills Views

Highlight • Viewpoint

From this spot on 63rd, you get great views over a large field of the Boulder Foothills. This spot is especially nice in the fall when the leaves are changing and the mountains and hills have a light dusting of snow. If coming from downtown Boulder, these views really help you feel like you're headed out of town.

Cottonwood Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This section of the Cottonwood Trail is a short, but sweet, crushed gravel trail that connects Independence Road to Jay Road. It's a nice, scenic way to avoid some of the busy road crossings on Diagonal Highway while enjoying riding next to a creek and past some open fields. While all of this section of trail is very doable on a road bike, there is a bridge crossing that sometimes has planks loose or missing so be aware of that if you're skinnier tires!

Is this gravel cycling route suitable for beginners?

No, this route is considered challenging and requires a very good fitness level. Olde Stage Road features steep climbs, with sections reaching up to 13.4% grade. The mix of paved and gravel surfaces, including potentially rough or washboard sections, also adds to the difficulty. It's not recommended for beginner gravel cyclists.

What kind of bike is best for this route?

Given the 'Gravel' designation, a gravel bike is ideal for this route. If you're using a road bike, ensure it has wider tires (at least 28-32mm) to handle the crushed gravel sections on the Cottonwood Trail and potentially rougher parts of Olde Stage Road.

Where does the Olde Stage and Nelson Road loop start, and what are the parking options?

The route starts from East Pearl Street in Boulder. You can find street parking in the surrounding residential areas or use public parking garages downtown. Be mindful of parking restrictions and time limits.

What is the terrain and surface like on this loop?

The loop offers a diverse terrain. You'll encounter primarily paved roads on sections like Old Stage Road and Nelson Road, but also significant crushed gravel sections on the Cottonwood Trail. The Goose Creek Path is paved. Some gravel sections, particularly on Olde Stage, can be rough with washboard surfaces or potholes, while others are smoother.

What scenic views or landmarks can I expect along the route?

You'll enjoy varied scenery. Nelson Road provides great Foothills Views and passes fields with horses and cows. The Cottonwood Trail offers a pleasant ride next to a creek and open fields. Is the Olde Stage and Nelson Road loop dog-friendly?

This route is primarily a cycling route that uses roads and multi-use paths. While dogs are generally allowed on leash on many Boulder trails, the intensity and length of this specific cycling loop make it less suitable for dogs. If you bring a dog, ensure they are well-behaved, on a leash, and can keep up with the pace, especially on shared roads.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this route?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle this loop. It utilizes public roads and multi-use paths.
