This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts and ends in the charming medieval town of San Quirico d'Orcia. You'll find parking available within or just outside the town, which serves as a convenient base for your hike.
The terrain primarily consists of long dirt roads, known as 'strade bianche,' that wind through the countryside. You'll encounter continuous views of the green, undulating hills of Val d'Orcia, with gentle ascents and descents, and some short, steep slopes followed by relaxing downhill sections.
The route offers breathtaking views of the Val d'Orcia landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll pass by the famous Cipressi di San Quirico d'Orcia, a picturesque cluster of cypress trees, and the historic Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta, an old church nestled amidst the rolling hills. Both are iconic sights of the region.
There are two main variations: the 'Anello Cipressi' is approximately 15 km (9.3 miles) and typically takes around 4 hours to complete. The 'Anello Vitaleta' is slightly shorter, around 10 km (6.2 miles), and would take less time. The Komoot route provided is about 11.4 km and takes approximately 3 hours and 17 minutes.
The San Quirico Ring Trail is generally considered a moderate hike, requiring good fitness. While the elevation gains are not extreme, appropriate hiking shoes are recommended. It might be challenging for very young children or absolute beginners due to its length and some steeper sections, but active families with some hiking experience should manage well.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, always ensure your dog is under control, especially when passing through agricultural areas or near livestock. Remember to carry enough water for both yourself and your pet, as refreshment points are scarce outside San Quirico d'Orcia.
The Val d'Orcia region is beautiful year-round, but spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the most pleasant hiking weather with vibrant landscapes. Summers can be hot, so an early start is advisable if hiking during July or August. Winter can be chilly but offers a unique, quieter experience.
No, you do not need a permit, and there are no entrance fees to hike the San Quirico Ring Trail. It's freely accessible to the public.
Given the moderate difficulty and length, you should bring appropriate hiking shoes, sufficient water, and snacks or food as refreshment points are scarce once you leave San Quirico d'Orcia. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also recommended, especially during sunnier months, as much of the trail is exposed.
The trail starts and ends in San Quirico d'Orcia, a charming town where you'll find various cafes, restaurants, and pubs to enjoy before or after your hike. However, once you are on the trail itself, refreshment points are very limited, so plan accordingly.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Anello di San Quirico (85%), Cammino del Lago Maggiore - Tappa Ispra - Sesto Calende (44%), and Grand Tour del Lago Maggiore ® - Tappa 4 - Sesto Calende - lspra (41%).
Super: beautiful hike with very varied impressions. Forest, trails, vineyards and the town with very nice houses and in the best weather ☀️
Walk in the cool undergrowth and on a quiet road with few views of the lake but lots of mosquitoes at the beginning of August. No access to the rocca without paying for the visit (€15 per person).
From the free car park in Uponne, we went up the mountain in the forest to the church of San Quirico. You can only look at it from the outside through the bars, but you have a wonderful view down to Lake Maggiore. On the circular path at the top of the mountain there is another Kodak* photo point (*insiders know 😉) over to Roca di Angera Castle. The path then led down and up again, right to her. After this second climb we went on to a delicious gelatti 🍨 at the Gelateria del Borgo (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) in Angera. Strengthened, our path led us through the forest back to the parking lot.
The starting point is a small, small parking lot that you would not have found without this information. On this round you can visit the castle with a previous vantage point and a beautiful hike. From the parking lot it goes pretty straight up to a small church. Here is a beautiful circular route that offers a first-class view of the castle and Lake Maggiore. The path then leads out of the forest and along the shore road for a long time. The short way (point ten) is not signposted to the castle, but it is the shortest way. Entry to the castle is €14 (excluding the garden and island). The castle itself is in an impressively great condition and is definitely worth a visit. The exhibitions (modern art, toy museum) are more a matter of taste. The way to the top of the tower is not signposted, you have to be a little careful not to miss the opportunities to climb. In my opinion, the view of the garden from above is completely sufficient. You don't need to buy an extra ticket. Down by the castle there is a local shop by the water where you can buy pasta or panini. Nice stopover in this nice little town. The way back leads out of the city into the forest and then back to the parking lot. A very nice hike to get to know one of the special sights on Lake Maggiore. --- Recommendations: "Hiking in the Harz - With 222 stamps to the hiking emperor". https://amzn.to/3VO8smK https://harz.soziales4u.de Crossing the Alps: 800 kilometers from Trieste to Oberstdorf: https://amzn.to/3GbVIjh https://soziales4u.de/viaalpina Hiking with children in the Harz: The Harzer Hexenstieg. 100 kilometers between fresh air and iPad.
