Hiking

Wild dune landscapes and bison are the keywords for this tour. The bison is a very special type of cattle. Bison were already considered extinct in the 20th century. Today the European bison is once again native to several countries on the continent. In the Netherlands, for example, the animals live in the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park - thanks to the “Wisenten in het Kraansvlak” project.

From the train station in Zandoort you first walk along the beach and then continue to a path that says it all: the “Wisentenpad”. This hiking trail is marked with yellow posts. At the entrance and exit to the path you will find information on how best to behave on this path. With a bit of luck you can see the bison here up close. The trail is accessible from September 1st to March 1st. In other months it is closed due to the bird breeding season. Then you can switch to the “Duinpieperpad” that runs parallel.

From the end of the Wisentenweg, the tour takes you back to Zandvoort - of course again with many views of the wild dune landscape.

Entrance to the Wisentenpad on the north side, from the Duinpieperpad. Access only between September 1 and March 1, no dogs or bicycles allowed.

A beautiful route through the Kraansvlak, right through the habitat of the wisents, which you can encounter along the path with any luck.

The Bison Trail is marked with yellow posts and runs straight through the bison area. This gives you an even greater chance of spotting these impressive animals.

Please note that this part of the area is only open outside the breeding season. Birds breed from approximately March 1 to September 1. During this period the Bison Trail is therefore not open to visitors.

The tour was supposed to be different and longer. Today, however, Komoot was once again the limiting element. Paths where there were none and barriers that were not visible on the map.
It was anyway! 😁

Before the hike, it is worth taking a look at wisenten.nl to see where the bison are
