Calderón Hondo Crater

Highlight (Segment) • Volcano

Calderón Hondo belongs to the Montaña Colorada - Bayuyo volcano series, which consists of nine volcanic cauldrons. Due to the volcanic activity of this area and the volcanic assemblage in the north, the island of Fuerteventura once gained an area of approx. 110 km² in the north.
The Calderón Hondo was characterized by its explosive volcanic activity. Its bowl-shaped crater is 70 m deep and connected to the Montaña Colorada mountain on the north-eastern side.

Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

In the Coto de los Tamboriles area are numerous dry stone walls that were once built to demarcate private property and to enclose arable fields.
The agricultural technique "dry farming" serves to increase the productivity of the field, whereby the low rainfall has been used to the maximum.
The first layer of stones was removed and used for the walls. The floor is covered with a layer of manure and another layer of lapilli (small lava stones). This technique gives the actual barren soil the properties required for farming. The fertilizer provides the necessary nutrients, the lapilli take care of temperature and moisture regulation. The lapilli absorb moisture from the air and naturally protect the soil from high temperatures. So it was possible to cultivate the soil.
Since the tourism boom in the 1970s, traditional cattle breeding and agriculture have almost ceased to exist.

The road is not paved, but can also be easily reached with a rental car. Hiking shoes are ideal, flip-flops are unsuitable if you want to walk around the crater. ***It is extremely windy on the volcano*** Highlight for children: There are many squirrels.

Small crater rim hike at Calderon Hondo. You can also walk around the bottom of the crater and/or take half of the Montana Colorada crater with you. A little climbing is required at the top of the crater rim. The crater is slightly more beautiful than the Bayuyo crater a little further north. This one isn't quite as high either. But the view (depending on the weather) from the Bayuyo Crater of the surrounding islands is much more beautiful.
