This route was planned by komoot.
Parking is available at the trailhead. Please note that parking fees are typically in effect from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Modern restrooms and picnic areas are also located near the parking lot.
Generally, dogs are not allowed on the trails within Rosy Mound Natural Area, with the exception of service animals.
The Rosy Mound Natural Area loop offers a unique experience year-round. While summer provides access to the Lake Michigan beach, spring and fall offer beautiful foliage and cooler temperatures. Winter hiking can also be rewarding, though conditions may be more challenging.
The terrain is diverse, featuring backdune forests, open dunes, and a sandy beach. Hikers will encounter footpaths, boardwalks, and compacted crushed stone. The primary challenge comes from a significant number of stairs—approximately 360 steps or 1,000 feet—that must be ascended and descended to reach the Lake Michigan shoreline, making it a moderate to challenging hike.
Highlights include the Rosy Mound Natural Area Trail itself, leading to stunning panoramic views of Lake Michigan from the Dune View observation deck. You'll also reach the beautiful Rosy Mound Natural Area Beach.
The loop is approximately 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) long and typically takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the views and beach.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Lakeshore Trail and a trail identified as 35 (Michigan). You can extend your trip by combining it with the Dune Trail, White Pine Loop, and Acorn Trail for a longer experience.
Near the parking lot, you'll find modern restrooms and picnic areas. Closer to the beach, there are rustic restrooms and a unique shade canopy for hikers.
While the trail is rewarding, the significant number of stairs (360 steps) to reach the beach can be challenging for very young children or those with limited mobility. However, some facilities and sections are designed to be ADA accessible, and older children who enjoy a physical challenge will likely enjoy the diverse terrain and beach access.
It offers a pristine example of a Great Lakes dune ecosystem, including high wooded dunes, foredunes, and a half-mile sandy beach. The challenging stair climb leads to spectacular panoramic views of Lake Michigan, providing a sense of seclusion and natural beauty akin to more remote areas, despite its proximity to Grand Haven.

Unfortunately, this is only the planned tour imported - Komoot did not recognize a GPS signal. I hope it works again on the next tours. But to the tour, simply beautiful. A nature park on Lake Michigan, you walk through quiet forests in the shade over stairs and boardwalks and suddenly stand on a platform and see dunes and the "lake" in front of you. The lake is so huge, you don't see the shore, so it's like a sea with the dunes and the beach. And that's how hot it was. Before I ran to the beach, I made a detour through the White Pine Trail, always accompanied by chipmunks running back and forth between the threads without fear. As do squirrels. On the beach I was accompanied by a large butterfly, but it didn't want to be photographed. And yes, I treated my feet to some sea water - and it wasn't even too cold for me ;) That means something. At the end a short rest and something to drink - and back to the hotel. What a nice tip from my colleague.
