Hiking

The Pygmy Forest and Fern Canyon Loop offers a truly unique hiking experience, showcasing two vastly different ecosystems in one easy route. You'll wander through the Pygmy Forest, where ancient trees are stunted to miniature sizes, before descending into the lush, prehistoric-feeling Fern Canyon, with its towering fern-covered walls and a streambed you'll navigate. This 3.7-mile (6.0 km) hike, with 388 feet (118 metres) of elevation gain, is rated easy and takes about 1 hour and 41 minutes, making it a fantastic option for families or anyone seeking a high-reward, low-effort adventure.

This popular route is located in Van Damme State Park, near Mendocino. While the Pygmy Forest section features a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk, the Fern Canyon portion involves multiple shallow creek crossings and navigating over fallen logs and slippery stones, so wear appropriate footwear. Seasonal wooden footbridges may be in place during summer, but expect wet feet outside of peak season. Arrive early, especially on weekends, as this trail can get busy.

What makes this trail truly special is the dramatic ecological contrast: from the bizarrely stunted trees of the Pygmy Forest, a scientific marvel formed by ancient marine terraces and nutrient-poor soil, to the primeval beauty of Fern Canyon, which even earned it a feature in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park." It's a rare opportunity to witness such distinct natural wonders within a single, accessible loop.

Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

Explore the Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail, a short 300-yard loop boardwalk at Van Damme's eastern end, just two miles inland from Highway One. Over the course of 300,000 years, the forces of nature, including poor acidic soil and hardpan, have created a miniature wonderland resembling a bonsai forest.

As you stroll along the boardwalk, you'll encounter interpretive panels that reveal the fascinating story behind these diminutive trees. Here, you'll find Bollander pine (exclusive to the pygmy forest), bishop pine, dwarf manzanita, and Mendocino cypress. Trees that would typically grow over 100 feet tall elsewhere are only a few feet tall here, with trunks as thin as a quarter-inch.

The boardwalk hovers just above the forest floor to protect the nutrient-rich lichen. In some spots, you'll be eye-level with these ancient, tiny treetops. Don't miss the chance to explore this living testament to nature's forces!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to hike the Pygmy Forest and Fern Canyon Loop?

The full loop is approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long and generally takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. This duration can vary depending on your pace and how much time you spend exploring the unique features along the way.

What kind of terrain and scenery will I encounter on this hike?

This trail offers a dramatic contrast in scenery. You'll start in the Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail, characterized by stunted, ancient trees growing in nutrient-poor soil, giving it a dry, almost chaparral-like appearance. The terrain here often includes a boardwalk. As you transition to the Fern Canyon Scenic Trail, the environment becomes lush and damp, following the Little River through a canyon abundant with various fern species and featuring several wooden bridge crossings.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The primary attractions are the unique Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail, where 80-100 year old trees are only a few feet tall, and the vibrant Fern Canyon Scenic Trail, known for its dense fern growth and picturesque river crossings. You'll also traverse sections of the Old Logging Road Trail.

Is the Pygmy Forest and Fern Canyon Loop suitable for all skill levels?

The overall loop is generally considered intermediate due to some uphill sections, particularly the single-track ascent towards the Pygmy Forest. However, the Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail boardwalk is an easy, accessible stroll, and the first 2.5 miles of the Fern Canyon Scenic Trail are relatively flat, making them enjoyable for beginners.

Where is the best place to park for the trailhead?

The trail is located within Van Damme State Park. Parking is typically available at the park's main entrance or designated parking areas near the Pygmy Forest trailhead. Look for signs directing you to the Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail parking.

Are dogs allowed on the Pygmy Forest and Fern Canyon Loop?

Dogs are generally permitted on paved roads and in campgrounds within Van Damme State Park, but specific trail regulations can vary. It's best to check with the park directly for the most current rules regarding dogs on this particular loop trail.

What is the best time of year to visit this trail?

The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but conditions vary. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures. During winter months, the Fern Canyon section can become quite wet, and stream crossings may lead to wet feet, so waterproof footwear is highly recommended if visiting then.

Are there any fees or permits required to access the trail or Van Damme State Park?

Yes, as the trail is located within Van Damme State Park, there is typically a day-use fee required for vehicle entry. This fee helps maintain the park's facilities and trails. No specific hiking permits are usually needed beyond the park entrance fee.

What unique ecological features can I observe in the Pygmy Forest?

The Pygmy Forest is a remarkable example of an "ecological staircase." Here, ancient cypress and pine trees, despite being 80 to 100 years old, are naturally dwarfed to heights of only 6 inches to 8 feet. This phenomenon is due to extremely nutrient-poor, acidic soil and an impenetrable hard-pan layer beneath the surface.

What should I wear or bring for this hike?

Dress in layers suitable for coastal California weather. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. If hiking during wetter seasons, especially in winter, waterproof footwear is advisable for the Fern Canyon section, as you might encounter wet conditions or choose to walk along the creek bed for an immersive experience.

Can I see any wildlife along the route?

Yes, the Little River, which flows through Fern Canyon, is known habitat for salmon and steelhead. If you visit during their spawning season, you might be lucky enough to observe them. The diverse forest environments also support various bird species and small mammals.
