Running

Today you will run through the forest and over peaks. Furthermore, on this trail run of almost 32 kilometers you occasionally get a touch of history.

The first kilometers go through the rolling Reichswald, or National Forest, along the Dutch border. In the Middle Ages, the forest was also called Ketelwald, which referred to the large primeval forest between Nijmegen and Xanten that was located here. The forest was also an important place for the Romans. You will also find an old railway line in the forest, which was previously used for timber transport.

Not only the Reichswald is undulating, this also applies to the rest of the route. During this trail run you climb to various peaks, including the Freilenberg and the Sint-Jansberg. So those calves can get some serious work done!

The touch of history can be found in the form of boulders and the large watershed, both remains of the Ice Age, and (a construction of) a Roman villa. Enjoy surprising nature and culture while running today!

The trail starts at a parking lot. If you come by public transport, get off at the Rijksweg/Kerkstraat bus stop, Milsbeek. From here it is a 20-minute walk to the route, but if you start running immediately, you will be there in no time. Bring plenty of water and a snack for the journey.

Forest Railway in Klever Reichswald

Highlight • Structure

There used to be a narrow-gauge railway here, initially for transporting wood and later for military purposes. At this point the route branched out and the two embankments of the curves can still be clearly seen.

Beautiful hilly terrain with a real 'top' of no less than 71 meters 😉. It is really beautiful here for running and for some serious hill training.

Glacial Erratic Boulders

Highlight • Natural Monument

These boulders of granite are a remnant of the glacial ice that reached this region in the last ice age: this 'creeping' ice brought these stones to the Netherlands from southern Sweden.

Great Watershed (Grote Waterscheiding)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Here you can see the Great Watershed, a moraine (land ridge) formed by uplifting glacial ice that separates the Waal and Maas areas. An interesting relic of earlier times.

A really beautiful piece of nature! Running past this part at a very quiet moment (I was literally alone) and that makes it extra special.
