Starved Rock State Park is a popular destination, so parking can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. There are multiple parking lots throughout the park. For a comprehensive loop, consider parking near the Starved Rock Lodge or the main visitor center, as many trails radiate from these central points. Arriving early in the day is highly recommended to secure a spot.
The terrain is diverse, featuring dramatic sandstone canyons, towering bluffs, and forested paths. You'll encounter a mix of dirt paths, wooden staircases, and boardwalks. Expect significant elevation changes due to numerous stairs leading into and out of canyons and up to overlooks. Some sections may have uneven ground, rocky outcroppings, and potential creek crossings, especially after rainfall, so sturdy, waterproof footwear is advisable.
This loop takes you through many of Starved Rock State Park's iconic features. You'll pass by the namesake Starved Rock, explore the unique geology of French Canyon, Kaskaskia Canyon, and Illinois Canyon. Enjoy breathtaking views from Lover's Leap Overlook, Owl Canyon Overlook, and Hennepin Canyon Overlook. You'll also encounter beautiful waterfalls like La Salle Canyon Waterfall and Ottawa Canyon Waterfall, and the impressive Council Overhang.
Each season offers a unique experience. Spring is ideal for seeing the numerous seasonal waterfalls at their fullest after snowmelt and rains. Fall provides stunning foliage. Winter transforms the canyons into glittering ice sculptures and is excellent for spotting bald eagles. Summer is popular but can be crowded; arrive early to avoid the busiest times.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trails in Starved Rock State Park, including this loop, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Please remember to clean up after your pet to help keep the park beautiful for everyone.
No, there are no entrance fees or permits required to access Starved Rock State Park or to hike its trails. It is free to visit and enjoy the natural beauty of the park.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails within Starved Rock State Park. You will hike along parts of the Campanula Trail, Wildcat Canyon - Lower bridge, Wildcat Canyon - Upper bridge, and Parkman's Plain Trail, among others, to complete this comprehensive loop.
Given the length and varied terrain, sturdy hiking boots are essential. Bring plenty of water, as there are limited refilling stations directly on the trail. Snacks or a packed lunch, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), insect repellent, and a map or GPS device are also highly recommended. Dress in layers, as weather conditions can change.
This full loop is considered difficult. While individual sections vary, combining them into a comprehensive loop involves significant elevation changes, numerous steep staircases, and uneven terrain. It requires a good level of fitness and stamina to complete the entire 19 km (12 mile) route.
To avoid the largest crowds, consider visiting on weekdays, especially outside of peak season (spring and fall weekends). Early mornings are generally quieter. While the main canyons like French and Starved Rock are always popular, some of the more remote sections of the loop, particularly those further from the main visitor center, tend to be less congested.
While there are visitor centers and facilities within Starved Rock State Park where you can find restrooms and water fountains, direct access to potable water along the extensive full loop trail is limited. It's crucial to carry sufficient water for the entire duration of your hike, especially on warmer days.
