Running

Embark on a challenging jogging adventure through Val Fondillo, a route that winds alongside the clear Fondillo torrent and through ancient beech forests. This difficult 7.4-mile (11.9 km) trail, with a significant 989 feet (301 metres) of elevation gain, is designed for experienced runners and typically takes around 1 hour and 34 minutes to complete. You'll navigate a mix of dirt roads, gravel paths, and unpaved sections, culminating in a steep uphill climb towards the captivating destination named after fairies, where clear water often flows.

While the initial sections are relatively flat and sunny, be prepared for the terrain to become more demanding as you progress into the dense beech forest. The route follows the well-marked F2 path, offering a clear journey through varied landscapes. Remember to wear sturdy footwear and ensure you have excellent fitness for the sustained uphill sections, especially towards the end of the route. This trail is best enjoyed when you are ready for a demanding workout.

Val Fondillo is celebrated for its "enchanted valley" atmosphere and rich biodiversity, including UNESCO World Heritage ancient beech forests. Keep an eye out for wildlife, as the area is home to protected species like the Marsican brown bear and Apennine wolf. You can also find the Acqua Sfranata spring near the Stazzo di Val Fondillo refuge, providing very cold, refreshing water to refill your bottles, even in summer.

Val Fondillo Springs

Highlight • River

In the small town of Opi, in Abruzzo, there are countless karst springs and one of these forms the Fondillo stream. It is one of the first tributaries of the Sangro stream, which gives its name to the valley of the same name.

Fairy Cave

Highlight • Cave

The Grotta delle Fate is so called because the sound of the waters seems to recall their song. From the cavity flows pure and transparent water from which the Fondillo stream is born.
