Hiking

The St Mary's Loch loop offers a moderate hike through the picturesque Yarrow Valley, covering 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with an elevation gain of 377 feet (115 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours and 31 minutes. As you hike, you will enjoy expansive views across St Mary's Loch, the largest natural loch in the Scottish Borders, often reflecting the surrounding low hills and the historic Ettrick Forest. The trail takes you through grassy paths, sections of the Southern Upland Way, and past the tranquil Loch of the Lowes, connected by a small river.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail includes varied terrain, from well-worn paths to woodland and moorland areas. Some sections can be muddy, so good walking boots are recommended for comfort and safety. A portion of the loop involves walking along the main road, which some hikers find unpleasant due to narrow, busy sections and blind corners; you might consider retracing your steps to avoid this part if you prefer.

This area is rich in history and cultural significance. You will pass the historic Tibbie Shiels Inn, a favorite haunt of author Sir Walter Scott, and a statue dedicated to the shepherd-poet James Hogg. The ancient St Mary's Kirkyard, with gravestones dating back to 1516, is another notable stop. The loch itself is reputedly the coldest in Scotland, adding to the unique character of this Scottish Borders trail.

Loch of the Lowes is a wonderfully-picturesque stretch of water surrounded by a ring of rolling hills. It is separated by a small stretch of land from its larger and more famous neighbour, St Mary’s Loch. You get a lovely view over the loch from this position and there is also a cafe nearby.

Dryhope Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

A ruined tower that has had a steel spiral staircase fitted inside so you can reach the top of the ancient building and admire the view. A great idea to blend the modern steel structure to the tower.

Absolutely brilliant weather for breathtaking scenery in the beautiful Scottish Boarders. St Marys Loch is a 13 k loop but we added the view from the hill above the St Marys graveyard ( because of the nice day and we got a bit lost on the way down so don't follow that bit) theres a great cafe at the end …
Starting and finishing at the carpark at point B. Lots of helpful signage now so very little on the actual A708. Footpaths alongside.
