Hiking
The St Mary's Loch loop offers a moderate hike through the picturesque Yarrow Valley, covering 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with an elevation gain of 377 feet (115 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours and 31 minutes. As you hike, you will enjoy expansive views across St Mary's Loch, the largest natural loch in the Scottish Borders, often reflecting the surrounding low hills and the historic Ettrick Forest. The trail takes you through grassy paths, sections of the Southern Upland Way, and past the tranquil Loch of the Lowes, connected by a small river.
When planning your visit, be aware that the trail includes varied terrain, from well-worn paths to woodland and moorland areas. Some sections can be muddy, so good walking boots are recommended for comfort and safety. A portion of the loop involves walking along the main road, which some hikers find unpleasant due to narrow, busy sections and blind corners; you might consider retracing your steps to avoid this part if you prefer.
This area is rich in history and cultural significance. You will pass the historic Tibbie Shiels Inn, a favorite haunt of author Sir Walter Scott, and a statue dedicated to the shepherd-poet James Hogg. The ancient St Mary's Kirkyard, with gravestones dating back to 1516, is another notable stop. The loch itself is reputedly the coldest in Scotland, adding to the unique character of this Scottish Borders trail.
