Hiking

This approximately 19-kilometer circular hike takes you to the Ploubazlanec cemetery at the beginning - and to the Wall of the Disappeared. Here the Icelandic fishermen are commemorated, who lost their lives in the dangerous cod fishing and disappeared in the Arctic Ocean.

After the excursion into the history of fishing, the tour shows you a more agricultural and everyday Brittany: small feeder roads that lead you past farmsteads, fields, meadows and greenhouses. The route across the country gives you a little insight into the local structures, instead of taking you past everyday life on specially created tourist paths.

In Loguivy de la Mer you then meet the long-distance hiking trail GR34 and follow it along the coast east and south back to the starting point. Very varied, the path leads you directly along the coast, sometimes through the fields of the farmers or small side streets in the villages and then again through dense forest.

Sturdy shoes are required. This path offers pretty much everything that is possible in terms of path quality. And when it rained, some sections are very muddy.

Wall of the Missing

Highlight • Monument

The Mur des disparus - the Wall of the Disappeared - is dedicated to the Icelandic fishermen who disappeared while fishing for cod in the depths of the Arctic Ocean.

In 1886, Pierre Loti wrote his novel Pêcheur d'Islande ("Iceland Fishermen") about this and about the working conditions of the crews.

Beautiful section of the Zöllnerweg (GR34). However, part of the route can be very swampy. Sturdy shoes are required.

Loguivy-de-la-mer

Highlight • Structure

Loguivy-de-la-mer is a pretty, typically Breton fishing port, relaxing for some, inspiring for others. François Budet, an eminent Breton poet, sang music about him that became an anthem for the region:

“Loguivy-de-la-mer, Loguivy de la mer
You watch the last true sailors die
Loguivy-de-la-mer, at the bottom of your old port
The carcasses of already dead boats are piled up.”

L'Arcouest (GR34)

Small promontory with a beach near the car park for the Île de Bréhat ferry. Located on the GR34 and is ideal for staying and taking a little break.

Rohou Panorama

Highlight • Viewpoint

At the top of a small open hill, this place called Rohou offers a 360-degree panorama of the tip of Arcouest, the ocean and the lands that encircle it. If you are staying at the neighboring campsite, take advantage of this quieter place to come and watch the sunsets.

One of the three small nature reserves around here on the GR34. Beautiful nature. Here with a rest area directly on the hiking trail.

Pors-Even (Ploubazlanec)

Highlight • Restaurant

The small harbor offers very interesting insights into inshore fishing and, when the tide levels are low enough, also into the oyster beds.

Incidentally, fresh oysters and mussels can be tasted directly on site at the producer (MOULERIE LE MÉE - PORS EVEN). The Moulerie is open for lunch and dinner (except Tuesdays) and always seems to be busy. We really enjoyed (in June 2019) the fresh mussels. The boss himself takes care of the service and a small documentary film about his oyster farming is shown in the guest room. With him as the main actor, of course. The final coffee (soluble) comes in disposable cups. Nevertheless, a big recommendation from me: Definitely go there.

June 14, 2025,Frankreich - Le Tour de la presqu'île de Ploubazlanec
A beautiful circular hike. The well-known GR34, the Customs Officers' Path, runs along the coast. It passes through smaller villages: Loguivy de la Mer, L'Arcouest, Pors Éven, and others.

Loguivy de la Mer has a harbor for private sailboats and motorboats, as well as for mussel and oyster fishing. In addition to its maritime heritage, this town also offers a …
