The starting point is Valkenburg station. Your first stop on this special route is the Hermitage on the Schaelsberg, a place full of spiritual significance and history. This hermitage was built in 1688 by order of Count Gerard Hoen van Cartiels and serves as a place of pilgrimage in honor of St. Leonardus van Noblat.
After the vault you continue your walk to the remnants of the Kalkoven Schaelsberg. Here you can get a glimpse of the past, where limestone was converted into quicklime using kilns. Although only the furnace mouth is still visible in the site, this place offers a fascinating insight into the industrial activities of the past.
