The hike typically begins in the charming town of Ribeauvillé itself. You can find various parking options within Ribeauvillé, though it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. From the town, the trail is well-marked as it ascends towards the castles.
This loop is generally classified as a moderate hike. While it offers stunning views, it involves a significant elevation gain of about 378 meters and can take around 3 to 4 hours to complete. Some sections are steep, rocky, and can be slippery when wet, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. It might be challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to hiking, but older, active children and beginners with good physical condition should manage it.
The terrain is varied, starting on charming cobbled streets in Ribeauvillé. As you ascend, it transitions to well-marked paths through lush forests and picturesque vineyards. You'll encounter dirt roads, natural paths, and some asphalt sections. Be prepared for steep and rocky parts, particularly on the ascents to and descents from the castles.
The primary highlights are the three medieval castle ruins:
The trail is beautiful year-round, but the best times are typically spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). In spring, the vineyards are budding, and wildflowers bloom. Autumn offers spectacular fall foliage and pleasant temperatures. Summer can be warm, so an early start is recommended. Winter hikes are possible but require caution due to potentially icy or snowy conditions on steeper sections.
Yes, the Three Castles of Ribeauvillé loop is generally dog-friendly. Many hikers enjoy this route with their canine companions. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially around other hikers, wildlife, and near the castle ruins. Remember to bring water for your dog, as sources might be limited on the trail.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail within the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons des Vosges. The park is open to the public, but hikers are expected to respect the natural environment, stay on marked paths, and follow general outdoor ethics.
Yes, this route intersects with several other official hiking paths. You'll find sections that are part of the Alsatian castles path, the GR 5 Vosges, Le Donon - Ballon d'Alsace, and local trails like the Hagelpfad, Lutzelbachweg, Passage Jeannelle, Neuer Rengelsbrunnweg, and Rengelsbrunnweg.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, we recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days, and snacks. A small backpack, a first-aid kit, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and rain gear (depending on the forecast) are also advisable. Don't forget your camera for the stunning views!
There are no dedicated restrooms or refreshment stops directly on the trail between the castles. It's best to use facilities in Ribeauvillé before you start. You'll find numerous cafes and restaurants in Ribeauvillé where you can enjoy a meal or drink before or after your hike.
To fully appreciate the historical significance and views, consider starting your hike early in the morning. This allows you to explore the castle ruins, especially Château de Saint-Ulrich, before they get crowded. Also, after your hike, take time to wander through Ribeauvillé's charming old town; it's a perfect complement to the medieval adventure.
There are parking lots higher up. I think it would be better to do the walk in the other direction, it's easier to go up on rocky ground than to go down. Very nice walk despite the rainy weather.
A great route, even with kids. Three castles on an 8km route 😁
A very short tour, but with challenging trails, beautiful paths, and rustic stonework. Simply wonderful.
Beautiful tour over beautiful paths and with great views! Afterwards, a walk through the streets of Ribeauvillé is worthwhile!
Anyone interested in visiting the three castles/ruins should plan a total of 1.5 to 2 hours.
This tour doesn't use the well-developed and wide forest roads for the ascent, but rather forest paths that are nevertheless easily accessible. This way, you'll be largely alone, at least during the ascent, and not in the throng of countless tourists. These are fantastic paths right through the forest.
If you are ever in this region, you should definitely take this tour. The starting point is a free parking lot 🅿️ All three ruins are free to explore at any time. Most of the paths are in the shade, which can be very pleasant when the temperatures are higher.
The description of the tour doesn't quite match the facts! The descent from the castles is particularly challenging! There's a lot of scree and very steep sections. This section should be rated higher. But overall, it's still a wonderful hike!
