How do I get to the trailhead for the Lower and Upper Mirror Lakes loop?

The trail starts directly from Valley Shuttle Stop #15 in Yosemite National Park. This makes it easily accessible via the park's shuttle system.

Is there parking available near the Mirror Lake trailhead?

While the trail is accessible from Valley Shuttle Stop #15, parking directly at the trailhead is limited. It's generally recommended to use the Yosemite Valley Shuttle system to reach the stop, especially during peak season, as parking within Yosemite Valley can be challenging.

What is the difficulty and terrain like on this loop trail?

This loop is considered an easy to moderate hike. The initial mile to Mirror Lake is a paved service road. Beyond that, the loop transitions to unpaved paths of dirt and rock along Tenaya Creek. While generally family-friendly, be aware that sections can be icy or snowy in winter and early spring, and rockfall can occur.

What is the best time of year to hike the Mirror Lake loop?

For the most iconic reflective views of the surrounding granite cliffs, visit in spring and early summer (typically May to July) when Mirror Lake is fullest from snowmelt. In late summer and fall, the lake can diminish significantly or even dry up, transforming into 'Mirror Meadow'.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Mirror Lake loop?

The Mirror Lake loop is located within Yosemite National Park, so a park entrance fee is required. However, a separate permit is not needed to hike this specific trail.

Is the Mirror Lake loop trail dog-friendly?

No, dogs are generally not allowed on unpaved trails in Yosemite National Park, including the unpaved sections of the Mirror Lake loop. They are permitted on paved roads and paths, but for the full loop experience, it's best to leave pets at home.

What can I see along the route?

The trail offers stunning views of iconic Yosemite landmarks like Half Dome, Mount Watkins, and Washington Column. You'll also pass by Mirror Lake itself, and cross the Happy Isles Bridge and a bridge over Merced River. Exhibits along the way provide insight into the area's natural and cultural history.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Yosemite Valley Loop Trail and the Bike Path, offering connections to other areas within Yosemite Valley.

Is this trail suitable for families with children?

Yes, the Mirror Lake loop is considered a family-friendly option. The initial paved section is easy, and the overall moderate difficulty makes it suitable for most families, especially when the trail conditions are good.

What should I wear and bring for this hike?

Wear comfortable hiking shoes suitable for both paved and unpaved surfaces. Layers are advisable due to changing mountain weather. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a camera to capture the scenic reflections. In winter or early spring, consider traction devices for icy sections.

Are there any facilities or amenities nearby?

You'll find the Happy Isles Nature Center Yosemite National Park near the start of the trail, which can provide restrooms and information. Other amenities like cafes and shops are available elsewhere in Yosemite Valley, accessible via the shuttle.

Trail Reviews

Helke
September 19, 2023, 🇺🇲 Lower and Upper Mirror Lakes loop — Yosemite Valley

Today I'm hiking the beautiful trail around both Mirror Lakes in Yosemite Valley with you. It starts at the campsite in Curry Village through fragrant forest until you reach the river and Mirror Lake. The water level was a bit low, but many people were excited about the clear water and jumped in. Only a few people went around Upper Mirror Lake, we were almost alone in the even more beautiful landscape there and then we were a bit afraid of the 🐻. The views are bombastic, we are directly under the Halfdome, amazing! At the turning point we crossed a bridge. The water underneath was so crystal clear, we just had to get in there, but huh: really cold☃️. After the refreshing swim and a picnic, the way back was much easier. We were also able to capture the mirror effect in a nice photo. There is a store at the campground, a souvenir of Yosemite must be with you! Have fun 🙋🏼‍♀️

Temperature drop in Yosemite NP🥶🥶, today we were out and about at max. 12°C. Still beautiful because there were significantly fewer people around. When you reached the 🌞 it was pleasant even with short clothes. The outward walk along Mirror Lake was also relaxing, with wonderful views of the magnificently rising mountains. From the turnaround point back on the other side of the river it became complicated because most parts of the actual hiking trail were under water. Now we had to improvise, but it was wonderful to keep moving along the base of Half Dom. The streams and rivers are still full to the brim. For this reason, no kayak, canoe or dinghy tours are currently being offered. We also planned to take the 🚙 to Glacier Point, but due to snow it is still inaccessible. From there you have a breathtaking view of the rear view of Half Dom. PS: Night frost 🥶🥶🥶 is forecast for today.
