Exmouth Beach

Highlight • Natural

Exmouth beach is around 2 miles (3.2 km) long and wonderfully sandy. There's a large tidal range here, so the beach can look completely different depending on what state of the tide you visit at. There are often large sand bars in the estuary as well and the beach is fantastic for swimming. Always look out for the RNLI lifeguarding flags and be careful of strong tides as the water leaves through a narrow channel.

Is this coastal loop suitable for beginners or families with children?

The Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton loop is generally considered a moderate hike, suitable for those with good fitness. While some sections, like the Exmouth promenade and parts of the old railway line, are flat and easy, the coastal path includes significant climbs and descents. There are steep ascents, such as from Sandy Bay, and some path sections can be narrow and extremely steep, which might not be suitable for very young children or those with mobility issues.

Is the South West Coast Path: Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton Loop dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly, but please be mindful of local regulations regarding dogs on beaches and in nature reserves, especially during peak seasons. Always keep your dog under control, particularly near livestock or wildlife in areas like the Otter Estuary Nature Reserve.

What is the best time of year to hike this coastal loop?

Spring and autumn often offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer can be beautiful but also busier, especially on beaches. Winter can be challenging due to potentially muddy paths and strong coastal winds, but offers dramatic scenery.

Do I need any permits or pay an entrance fee for this trail?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this section of the South West Coast Path or to access the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. However, parking facilities may have charges.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The loop offers many highlights. You'll pass along Exmouth Beach, see the iconic Orcombe Point and the Geoneedle, and experience the dramatic red cliffs. The Triassic Fossil Roots at Otter Sandstone Cliffs are a geological marvel, and the Otter Estuary Nature Reserve provides opportunities for wildlife spotting. You'll also find cafes like Bumble and Sea Café and Fifty Degrees North Café along the way.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The terrain is varied. It starts with a flat promenade in Exmouth, transitions to sandy beaches (tide permitting), and then involves significant climbs and descents along open clifftops with narrow, steep sections. You'll encounter red sandstone cliffs, gorse bushes, pine trees, and both sandy and pebble beaches. The inland return leg often follows a disused railway line, which is typically an easy, tarmac path.

What makes the geology of this coastline special?

This section of the South West Coast Path is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jurassic Coast. It's particularly known for its striking red Triassic cliffs, dating back approximately 240-250 million years. The Orcombe Point and the Geoneedle specifically highlight the Earth's layers and the area's rich geological history.

Does this route connect with other trails?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the South West Coast Path (Section 44: Exmouth to Sidmouth) and the National Cycle Route 2 Axminster to Dawlish. Smaller portions also intersect with the Otter Valley Walk and the Exmouth Town Trail.

Are there places to eat or drink along the way?

Yes, you'll find options for refreshments. In Exmouth, there are various establishments. Along the route, you can stop at places like Bumble and Sea Café and Fifty Degrees North Café. Budleigh Salterton also offers cafes and pubs.

Are there any specific sections of the trail I should be aware of?

Be aware that walking along the sandy beach to Sandy Bay is tide-dependent; otherwise, a climb up Orcombe Point is necessary. The path includes steep ascents and descents, particularly from Sandy Bay and a long, gentle uphill section coming out of Budleigh Salterton. Some coastal path sections can be narrow and very steep.
