This loop tour is generally classified as difficult, requiring good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. While some initial sections along the old military road (part of the Linea Cadorna) are wide, gently sloping, and family-friendly, the ascent to Monte Morissolo becomes steeper and more challenging. These parts can have numerous roots and slippery, sandy patches, and some sections may even require prior alpine experience or specialist equipment.
The trail offers a diverse range of terrain. You'll encounter natural paths, asphalt, dirt roads, gravel, and unpaved sections. As you approach the summit, the paths transition to mountain and alpine hiking trails, which can be steep, rocky, and sometimes slippery due to roots and sand. The initial parts, especially those following the historic Linea Cadorna, are generally well-maintained and easier.
The trail often starts from Piancavallo, which is easily accessible from Manegra. You'll find parking available near the hospital in Piancavallo, making it a convenient starting point for your loop tour.
This loop tour is rich in history and stunning views. You'll encounter the extensive Scenic Section of the Linea Cadorna, a system of World War I military fortifications. Explore Linea Cadorna fortifications with views over Lake Maggiore, including tunnels, bunkers, and cannon positions. The highlight is reaching Cima di Morissolo โ summit crosses and view of Lake Maggiore, offering incredible panoramic vistas.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in this region. However, given the trail's difficult classification and sections with steep, potentially technical terrain, it's important to assess if your dog is capable of handling such conditions. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other hikers, and be mindful of local regulations.
The trail is particularly beautiful in autumn when the deciduous forests, including beech woods and rowan trees, display vibrant colors. Spring and early summer also offer pleasant conditions before the peak heat. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly in mountainous areas.
This trail is located within the Val Grande National Park. While there isn't typically an entrance fee for hiking on the general trails, it's always a good idea to check the official Val Grande National Park website for any specific regulations, permit requirements for certain activities, or protected areas, especially if you plan to deviate from marked paths or camp.
Yes, you can find a fountain at Colle, which is a good spot to replenish your water supply during the hike. However, it's always recommended to carry sufficient water for your entire journey, especially on a difficult loop like this.
Yes, this route shares sections with several other official trails. You'll find it intersects with parts of the Cannero - Verbania and Verbania - Cannero trails. It also crosses sections of the R10 Sacro Monte S.S.Trinitร di Ghiffa - Pollino - Piancavallo - Colle - Passo Folungo, Piancavallo - Morissolo "Strada Cadorna", and Il Colle - Morissolo trails.
The overall loop is considered difficult and may not be suitable for young children or families seeking an easy outing. However, the initial sections, particularly along the old military road (part of the Linea Cadorna), are wide, gently sloping, and can be quite family-friendly, offering a taste of the historical sites and views without tackling the challenging summit ascent.
From the summit of Monte Morissolo, you'll be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views. These include expansive vistas of Lake Maggiore, stretching from Locarno and covering almost the entire lake. You can also see towards the Vigezzo Valley and the majestic peaks of the Val Grande National Park. The nearby Monte Morissolino offers an equally impressive 360-degree panorama.
Beautiful excursion. You start from the car park of the Auxological Institute of Piancavallo and then proceed, up a very slight climb and with splendid views of Lake Maggiore, up to a "colletto" and from here, if you want, to the top of Mount Morissolo (1,311 m). Then you continue through a beech forest in the shade until you reach Il Colle from which the path starts (fairly wide and well marked) up to the summit of Mount Spalavera (1,534 m) from which you can enjoy a wonderful 360ยฐ view. Returning back to Il Colle, we then follow the asphalted Luigi Cadorna road to complete the Tour at the starting point
