Portree is Skye’s pretty capital town, fronted by rows of colourful houses and home to shops, pubs and cafes. It’s a lovely place to sit and watch the boats come and go from the bustling harbour, and a great base for exploring the local trails.
This Tour explores a short coastal route straight from the town centre. At slightly less than 3 miles (4.6 km) it’s a perfect loop for an easy run or busy day. Like most runs on Skye, it quickly feels like an adventure, tracing the coastal path towards the rocky headland of Sgeir Mhòr. As soon as you turn the corner the views stretch out to the horizon and the feel is wild, with the big cliffs of Creag Mhòr in front and the Isle of Raasay across the water. Returning inland, you’ll circle Ben Chracaig, following good tracks back to Portree.
The Skye half marathon is held here in June each year, while the Trotternish Ridge fell race finishes just to the north.
There’s a good selection of accommodation, shops and cafes in Portree. Inside Out is the local outdoor shop and stocks a range of outdoor kit if you need anything.
