The trail is generally considered moderate, requiring good fitness. While some sections are easily accessible, others might involve walking on seawalls, sand, and rocks, especially at low tide. The elevation gain is minimal, making it largely flat.
The loop typically starts and ends in the charming village of Barfleur, often near its historic port. You can find parking in Barfleur to begin your hike.
You'll experience a diverse landscape, from the picturesque Barfleur Harbour with its old granite houses to dramatic coastal views from promontories like Pointe de la Masse. A major highlight is the impressive Gatteville lighthouse, and inland sections offer glimpses of manors and the undulating Norman bocage.
Key highlights include the historic Barfleur Harbour, the William the Conqueror Monument, and the iconic Gatteville lighthouse. Climbing the lighthouse offers breathtaking panoramic views of the English Channel and the coastline.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and summer offer the most pleasant weather for coastal hiking and climbing the lighthouse. Always check local weather conditions before you go.
Generally, dogs are welcome on trails in this region, but it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially in populated areas like Barfleur and near livestock or sensitive natural habitats. Be mindful of other hikers and local regulations.
No specific permits or entrance fees are required to hike the Phare de Gatteville loop from Barfleur. However, there is an entrance fee if you wish to climb the Gatteville lighthouse.
When hiking along the coast, particularly near Havre de Crabec, parts of the route may involve walking on seawalls, sand, and rocks. It's advisable to check tide times, as some sections might be easier or more accessible at low tide.
Yes, sections of this loop follow portions of the GR®223, a well-known long-distance coastal path. You will also traverse parts of local trails such as Chemin de Barfleur, Chasse des Salines, and Passage Boisard.
Yes, the starting and ending point of the loop, Barfleur, is a charming village with several options for cafes, restaurants, and accommodation. It's a great place to relax and refuel after your hike.
A very varied route over cliffs and sandy beaches, mostly right on the water. The view from the lighthouse is sensational.
With the right clothes, even slightly damp weather can be endured. The drizzle soon subsided and we were able to let the wind blow around our noses without a hood. Splendid! 🌬🌧☔️ Due to the high waves, we covered a few passages over walls or quite quickly on the beach. But that also makes hiking exciting. Arriving at the lighthouse, I had to take a lot of photos to show the power of wind and water. It is always an impressive natural spectacle for me!
