The trail features multiple trailheads with parking available. You can find access points around Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Boulder City, and Henderson.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly, but always ensure your pet is on a leash and you clean up after them. Remember to bring plenty of water for your dog, especially given the desert environment and lack of shade.
The most popular months for cycling are April and October when temperatures are milder. While open year-round, summer can be extremely hot with little shade, so early morning rides are recommended during those months. Winter offers cooler, pleasant conditions.
The River Mountains Loop Trail itself does not require a permit. However, portions of the trail pass through the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which may have entrance fees depending on your access point. You can find more information on fees and regulations at nps.gov.
Many cyclists prefer riding the loop clockwise. This direction generally offers less steep but longer climbs compared to the counter-clockwise direction, which can have sharper, more intense uphill sections, particularly the 'Three Sisters' section.
The full 35-mile loop typically takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete by touring bicycle, depending on your pace, fitness level, and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
While the trail is paved and well-maintained, the full 35-mile loop involves significant elevation changes and is rated as 'difficult' overall. Some sections are quite hilly. Beginners or families with young children might prefer to cycle shorter, flatter sections or consider other nearby trails. Good to very good fitness is recommended for the entire loop.
The trail is primarily paved with asphalt and concrete, making it suitable for touring bikes. While mostly smooth, some sections, like the 'Canal Trail' option, can be a bit bumpy due to concrete seams. There are also about 3.5 miles of an old railroad bed, which offers a more gradual grade.
You'll experience a wild fusion of landscapes, including craggy mountains, rugged desert, and majestic views of Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. Keep an eye out for desert bighorn sheep, jackrabbits, lizards, and various desert birds. The trail also passes through tunnels and offers panoramas of the Las Vegas Wash and Valley.
The trail offers many scenic spots. You'll pass through the River Mountains Loop Trail – East Side Tunnels, which are part of the historic railroad bed. Other highlights include views of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and the Water Street District in Henderson. You might also spot the Giant Bicycle sculpture.
There is very little natural shade along the trail, so it's crucial to plan accordingly, especially during warmer months. While there are some amenities like accessible pit toilets and self-service bike repair stations at trailheads, reliable water sources are limited. Always carry plenty of water, more than you think you'll need.
Yes, the River Mountains Loop Trail connects to several other paths, including the Historic Railroad Trail, the Henderson UPRR trail, and the Clark County Wetlands Nature Preserve's new trail system. It is also part of the larger Vegas Valley Rim Trail.
