Running

The Cookham Commons are a series of commons including Cookham and Widbrook in the east, Cock Marsh and Winter Hill in the north, and Cookham Dean in the west. Covering an area of over 840 acres (340 ha) in the Thames valley, just a few miles west of London, these high chalk escarpments offer amazing views over the city and the lower lying surrounding land.

The commons boast a diverse landscape of open chalk grasslands, lush wildflower meadows and riverside trails, home to a wide selection of butterflies, flowers and birds. Look out for silver-washed fritillaries, commas, orchids, rock rose, great crested grebes and red kites.

This Tour starts along a section of the Thames Path, a National Trail that runs 185 miles (298 km) from the Cotswolds to Woolwich in London. Leaving the river bank, you’ll head out on a loop of Winter Hill and Cock Marsh Common. The evidence of human habitation here dates back 350,000 years to the old stone age, while later discoveries include bronze age burial mounds and Roman pottery. At the far end of the loop you’ll pass the Bounty, a pub that’s only accessible by foot or boat and provides a good opportunity for a mid-run stop-off.

The start and finish point is at Bourne End station, about 40 minutes by train from Paddington.

Bourne End Railway Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Bourne End Railway Bridge was originally a wooden bridge designed by Brunel in the 1850's. The narrow spans used were unpopular with the river traffic, so it was re-designed and made in steel in 1895. A footbridge was added in 1992 replacing a ferry that crossed a little further upstream.
It's a useful crossing point allowing access for runners to the National Trust managed Cookham Common on the west bank. The Thames Path long distance trail also crosses the bridge on its journey from Wiltshire to London.

Thames Path: Cookham to Bourne End

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Thames Path is a long-distance National Trail that runs from the source of the Thames in the Cotswolds to Woolwich in London. It's 185 miles (298 km) long if you fancy running the whole thing.
This section of wonderfully flat running on an easy trail follows the Thames from Cookham in the south to Bourne End railway and pedestrian bridge. The Thames Path crosses here and continues on the north bank if you are running further.
National Trust properties Cock Marsh and the Cookham Commons lie to the
west, with areas of higher land in this mostly flat landscape. It's great for running and rich in wildlife.

Winter Hill

Highlight • Natural

Winter Hill is a steep chalk escarpment offering amazing views over the Thames Valley. It's believed that historically the hill and high land here were used for winter pasture for animals during times of flooding. The evidence of human inhabitation, farming and land use dates back 350,000 years to the old stone age. There are also Bronze Age burial mounds and Roman pottery discovered in the area.
Bourne End station isn't far away, and you can run an enjoyable loop across Cookham Common, Winter Hill and along the Thames Path.
