East Buxton Lime Kilns

Highlight • Monument

At a first glance from a distance these lime burning ovens look like the remainders of a bit strangely designed bridge. You can get in to understand better how they worked.

Trail Reviews

Doggy Dawdles
August 10, 2024, Miller's Dale Doggy Dawdle

Lovely walk with great views but you need to be sure footed as paths are uneven, rocky and can be slippery. Fine if you have all paw drive though 🐾

Following the river Wye which is in a very steep sided Limestone Valley. The riverside path turns into a tricky & technical, narrow & rocky track next to the beautiful, fast running, clean River. As it becomes a cliff-sided gorge, there are the famous Chee Dale Stepping Stones (two sets) to negotiate, all invigorating stuff! Certainly not your average walk, a challenging & mildly treacherous hike. The rocks have been polished very smooth over the years, slippery when wet & muddy! Climb up to the end of the Monsal Trail for a pleasant and simple gravel walk back through a few tunnels.
