Hiking

Tackle the challenging ascent of Mount Juneau, a difficult hike covering 6.5 miles (10.5 km) with an elevation gain of 3028 feet (923 metres). This route typically requires about 5 hours and 41 minutes to complete. You start on the Perseverance Trail, winding through a boreal forest before the steep climb begins on the Mount Juneau Trail itself. In summer, you might notice vivid green salmonberry bushes along the way. Once you push above the tree line, the landscape opens up, offering wide views of the Gastineau Channel, downtown Juneau, and Douglas Island.

This very strenuous trail is best suited for experienced hikers due to its significant elevation and technical sections. The trailhead is conveniently accessible from downtown Juneau, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors. If you plan to hike during winter or early spring, be sure to check current conditions, as avalanche danger can be present.

Mount Juneau is considered an iconic local hike, renowned for providing some of the best vantage points over the city. On clear days, the expansive vista extends even further, allowing you to see the distant Chilkats and Lemon Creek Glacier. This route offers a unique perspective on the region's natural beauty and urban landscape.

Perseverance Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Now one of the most popular hiking trails in and around Juneau, this designated National Recreation Trail began its life as the first road in Alaska, connecting the mines and mills in this basin with the waters of the Gastineau Channel down below.

However, this trail's history goes back even further, as it was originally used by Alaska Native peoples for hunting and harvesting.

Nowadays this trail is a wonderfully social destination just a (relatively) short walk from the downtown cruise ship terminal. On a single hike here you may get to chat with amateur gold miners, cruise ship passengers, or knowledgeable locals, while also spotting birds, wildlife, and plentiful berries and wildflowers, depending on the season. Be aware that avalanche danger may continue through winter and early spring.

Perseverance Trail links into other old mining roads/trails, and also serves as the start of the hike up Mount Juneau. If you'd like some company in exploring this area, local guide companies offer guided trips to explore the basin and mining ruins.

Ebner Falls

Highlight • Waterfall

You can probably guess how Gold Creek got its name. But the history behind Ebner Falls — this picturesque waterfall in Gold Creek, which you can see from an overlook on the trail — is a little more obscure. It may have been named for one of the early miners in this area.

From this trail juncture, turning to the west will lead you up the challenging trail to the summit of Mount Juneau. Continuing on the main Perseverance Trail, to the east, will lead you to intersections with other mining roads and the ruins of several mines in Silverbow Basin.

Mount Juneau Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The trail up Mount Juneau pairs beautiful views over Juneau and Douglas Island — on a clear day — with plenty of challenges.

A few things to keep in mind: this is a steep, strenuous trail that can be slippery when wet, with avalanche hazard persisting into spring and large snowbanks often lingering near the top of the trail. People have died here if they were unlucky or poorly prepared.

Taking the mountain seriously — which includes choosing a clear, dry day to hike it, being well-prepared for rapidly changing weather, and turning back if conditions warrant — is the best way to guarantee a fun, successful hike.
