St. James Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

St. James Pass is located on the watershed between the Po Valley and the Ligurian Sea and was an important crossing point during the Middle Ages for travelers and merchants who went from Finale Ligure to Mallare. Here stands the Church of San Giacomo surrounded by numerous picnic tables and some brick barbecues. On the hill there is also a plaque dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the Napoleonic wars and a memorial that commemorates the partisans who died here at the hand of the Nazi-fascist troops during the Resistance.

Ex NATO Base

Highlight • Structure

NATO's "Scatter" base worked as a radio base from 1962 to 1992, year in which it was abandoned due to the end of the Cold War. Twenty American soldiers lived here and people still rumor about trucks disappearing into stone openings, helicopters hovering above the base at night, hidden missile platforms and secret tunnels within the mountain. After several ideas for a potential recovery, none of which have ever seen the light, it serves as the main starting point of the mountain bike trails of Finale Ligure, as well as the playground of several local street artists, who spray paint their masterpieces onto its crumbling walls.

Pian Marino Plateau

Highlight • Natural

The Pian Marino plateau is famous among rock climbers for its crag. Here it is common to come across groups of climbers heading to the crag. Keep on the path that leads to the crag to arrive at the Pian Marino quarry, where the Pietra di Finale was extracted.

St. John’s Castle

Highlight • Castle

St. John’s Castle was built by the Spaniards between 1640 and 1644 to enhance the fortification system of Finale Ligure. The castle overlooked and protected Finalborgo, the capital of the Marquisate of Finale. St. John’s Castle was abandoned in 1707 and in 1713 it was ceded to the Genoese, who partially demolished it. In 1882 it was transformed into a women's prison and since 1960 it is owned by the Italian State, which completely restored it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park and access the 'Ex base NATO di Calice Ligure – giro ad anello' trail?

You can typically find parking in Calice Ligure, which serves as a common starting point for this loop. Many riders also opt for shuttle services to reach the former NATO base directly, allowing them to focus on the exhilarating downhill sections. These services usually operate from Finale Ligure or nearby towns.

Is this mountain bike loop suitable for beginners?

No, this loop is rated as a difficult mountain bike ride. It demands very good fitness and advanced riding skills due to its significant elevation changes and technical terrain, including roots, stone sections, and potential S3-S6 difficulty on the Single Track Scale. You should be prepared for sections where you might need to push your bike.

What kind of terrain can I expect on this mountain bike loop?

The trail offers varied terrain, from flowy sections with berms and jumps to more technical passages with roots and stone sections. You'll encounter a mix of purpose-built 'Finale-style' trails and natural, rugged paths, including singletrack and doubletrack sections. The route also features a significant amount of climbing and descending.

What interesting sights or viewpoints can I expect along the route?

This loop offers a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. You'll pass by the abandoned Ex NATO Base, a unique 'bizarre ruin' adorned with street art. Enjoy panoramic views of Finale Ligure and the sea, including landmarks like the Church of Madonna di Loreto. Other highlights include the Pian Marino Plateau, Castel Gavone Tavern, and St. John’s Castle.

Is the 'Ex base NATO di Calice Ligure – giro ad anello' trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Finale Outdoor Region, it's advisable to keep them on a leash due to the technical nature of this mountain bike route, the presence of other riders, and potential wildlife. Ensure your dog is fit enough for a challenging ride and that you carry enough water for both of you.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee to ride this trail?

Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to ride the 'Ex base NATO di Calice Ligure – giro ad anello' trail itself. However, as part of the Finale Outdoor Region, it's always good practice to check local regulations or any specific event-related requirements that might be in place.

What is the best time of year to mountain bike this loop?

The Finale Ligure area, including this trail, is popular for mountain biking year-round. However, the best seasons are typically spring and autumn when temperatures are milder. Summer can be very hot, and while winter riding is possible, some sections might be muddy or slippery after rain. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.

Does this loop connect with other trails in the area?

Yes, the route intersects with numerous other trails in the renowned Finale Ligure area. Notably, it passes through sections of the Sentiero Ermano Fossati, Orco - Colla San Giacomo, and Terre Alte trails. The former NATO base itself is a hub for many popular trails like Madre Natura, 115, and H Trail, offering many options for extending or modifying your ride.

What should I bring for this mountain bike ride?

Given the trail's difficulty and length (over 34 km), you should bring plenty of water, energy snacks, a repair kit (including spare tubes/patch kit, pump, and multi-tool), and a first-aid kit. Wearing appropriate mountain biking gear, including a helmet, gloves, and protective padding, is highly recommended. A GPS device or a loaded map on your phone is also essential for navigation.

Are there places to eat or drink along the trail?

While the loop itself is quite remote in sections, you'll find the Castel Gavone Tavern listed as a highlight, which could be an option depending on its opening hours and your timing. It's always best to carry sufficient food and water for the entire ride, as services might be limited or require a detour.

What is the historical significance of the former NATO base on this trail?

The Ex NATO Base was an operational 'Scatter' radio base during the Cold War, from 1962 to 1992. Since its abandonment, it has transformed into a major mountain biking hub. It's shrouded in local lore, with tales of secret tunnels and military activity, adding a mysterious and unique historical layer to your ride through its crumbling, art-adorned walls.

Drive from the coast to the former NATO base. The rental bike was the original Heckmair Alpencross bike from the 80s. 😀

Today we went past San Bernardino, Colombara, Feglino to the NATO base at 1050 m above sea level. Since we had taken over an existing tour, we unfortunately rode uphill on the Crestino path and thus against the direction of travel. Luckily we were able to avoid oncoming traffic on the paths next to the trail, but the route to the NATO base is not recommended. Once there, empty buildings everywhere, countless graffiti and a lost place feeling exude an unparalleled feeling of freedom. We then went downhill along the Strada provinciale into numerous trails right next to the road, level mostly S2/S3. And it is effectively S2/S3 if not more. Blocked. Rooted. The trails don't give you any time to enjoy the landscape and demand the full attention of the riders. Finalborgo at the end of the tour invites you to Foccacia & Panache with its picturesque old town. All in all, a strenuous but definitely worthwhile day Trails: ANA, Ciapin Lodge, A Carbonera, Crestino path, H.Veloce, Sentiero della Neviere, Pian Marino Top, Strada Beretta
