Scenic Climb on the South Side of Loch Ness

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A B road climb to the top of that gentle hill that only the constant wind and fog will make challenging. The views are breathtaking. This is Scotland landscapes as you thought they’d be. Well worth choosing the south side of Loch Ness to go to or from Fort Augustus!

Inverness Castle

Highlight • Castle

Inverness Castle overlooks the River Ness from a sandstone cliff and affords fine views over the ancient and picturesque city of Inverness. The castle’s position, bridging the mouth of the river as it enters the Moray Firth, has ensured its place at the centre of political, religious and mercantile life in the Highlands for the best part of two millennia. The site is free to explore during daylight hours. There is a viewpoint that you can pay more to see, though.

April 28, 2024, Etape Loch Ness

Completed 2024. Official time 5hrs 16mins which includes 2 rest stops and 20 mins waiting for Wayne at the top pf the climb. Actual moving tome 4hrs 28 mins but could do it faster at my own pace. Could complete in 4hrs

What a route. Loved it. The views were amazing. Would have been nice to miss the rain completely, but it is Scotland, so def made the right decision sticking the rain jacket on. Jumped from group to group on the way to Fort Augustus, then after THE climb (which isn’t that bad) I found myself in no man’s land, so just tried to keep the average speed as best I could riding solo in wind. Managed to latch onto a little group with about 10k left which helped the legs for sure. Overall pretty happy. Super well organised event and a great atmosphere. So not all roadies are miserable f**kers?! Who knew! Will I be back? (Loving all the new PR’s)

Until the day before I wasn't sure if I'd make this as my coccyx has been really bothering me. I am also suffering from a vitamin deficiency, which is causing exhaustion so my intention was only to try and get as far as I could then get picked up along the way. I wanted to at least take part since I'd paid. The first 30 miles or so was great but the hill did me in. I had to walk it in several parts as it was so relentlessly steep. It added an hour onto my time. The weather was horrific at the top of the hill and all the way back to Inverness, but I'm really proud of just being able to finish, never mind how long it took. A very tough but satisfying day! Edit: Turns out I not only had a B12 deficiency but also anaemia which is why I was so slow and it was so exhausting. I can’t believe I managed to complete it with everything going on! Madness.

Was an incredible event even with the crash, freezing temps and driving rain. Will be back next year!

Well what can I say but loved it this has got to be my favourite sportive of the callendar. It’s pretty flat and fast apart from that hill and the worst bit of it is the bottom but I just fuelled 30 minutes prior and all was good. Mega decent and fantastic scenery. So good to have a closed road event again. First thing this morning it was it was dark, mizzily and foggy but it lifted and the cloud inversions were stunning and we finished in sunshine. Contemplating going for a wee gentle ride. I see that on doenliading from Strava the time has been changed actual time was 3hr 52min 15 sec and 16.9 mile/hr average. -- myWindsock Report -- Feels Like Elev: 1308.9m Weather Impact: 4.9% Headwind: 78% @ 1.9-5mph Longest Headwind: 02h 12m 30s Air Speed: 17.3mph Temp: 13.3-17°C Precip: 6% @ 0.01 Inch/hr -- END --
