This route was planned by komoot.
The most common starting point for this trail is from the village of Cazevieille. There is typically parking available near the trailhead. As it's a popular route, arriving earlier in the day, especially on weekends, is advisable to secure a spot.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the region, it's important to keep them on a leash, especially given the rocky terrain and potential for wildlife. The final ascent can be challenging for some dogs due to the steep, stony sections.
Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking this trail. The temperatures are milder, and the Mediterranean garrigue is vibrant. Summer can be very hot, making early morning or late afternoon hikes preferable, while winter can bring colder conditions and potentially slippery rocks.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Pic Saint-Loup Trail from Cazevieille. The area is freely accessible to the public.
The terrain is notably stony and rocky throughout, with some steep switchbacks. The initial sections climb through scrubland, but the path becomes increasingly rocky as you ascend. The final section to the summit is steeper, winding through white limestone rocks, and may require using your hands for balance.
While relatively short, this trail is considered to have a moderate to sustained difficulty level due to its rocky terrain and steep final ascent. It's popular with families, but vigilance is required, and it might be challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to rocky, uneven paths.
From the summit of Pic Saint-Loup, at 658 meters, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree panorama. On clear days, you can see the Mediterranean Sea, Mount Aigoual, Larzac, Mount Ventoux, the Cévennes, the Buèges Valley, and even the Pyrenees on the horizon. The View of the Cévennes and the Sea from Pic Saint-Loup is a highlight.
The trail ascends through typical Mediterranean garrigue, characterized by junipers, green oaks, strawberry trees, rosemary, and wild thyme, filling the air with their scents. As you climb, you'll see the vineyards and perched villages of the Grand Pic Saint-Loup region.
Yes, this route is part of a larger network. The trail from Cazevieille is fully integrated into the official route known as "Le Pic Saint-Loup". It also covers significant sections of "Chemin du signal de Mailhebiau à Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers - Tracé principal" and smaller portions of trails like "Crête Ouest du Pic Saint-Loup" and "Crête du Pic Saint-Loup".
Due to the stony and rocky nature of the trail, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and grip are highly recommended. Bringing sufficient water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and perhaps hiking poles for stability on descents is also advisable.
Cazevieille is a small village, so facilities directly at the trailhead might be limited. However, the wider Grand Pic Saint-Loup region is known for its charming villages and vineyards, where you can find cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options a short drive away.
I don't recommend this picnic area at all. You have to walk almost 3km from the car, it's uphill, and it's hot! 1 star! 🤪
Beautiful and strenuous hike up the Pic Saint Loup. From there you have a great view of the Mediterranean Sea.
Hello Nature lovers You don't know the Pic St Loup?, yet I'm sure you have it with its characteristic appearance and the Horhus opposite. An emblematic mountain for Montpellier residents, it will allow you, after an hour of sometimes rugged ascent, to admire a breathtaking 360-degree landscape. Cévennes, Mediterranean, Alpilles, Sète, Mont Aigual, foothills of the Pyrenees, truly a beautiful spectacle. The night was super calm at his feet, awakened simply by the magical Grand Duke of Europe. In the morning, the nightingale Philomène sang wonderfully, wishing us, I am sure, a good journey. If you go there, above all, go through Claret, and go to the tiny shop above the Cade oil distillery, unique in Europe!!!, and then there is a smell that you will never be able to forget …. Have a nice walk.
