Fort long loop (blue) — Sutton Bank MTB trails

The Fort long loop is a step up from the shorter loop, adding on an extra 3.6 miles (5.9 km) and turning what was quite a flat loop into a hillier one. There's also additional technical challenges, including roots, rocks and small drops, so this is certainly one for more confident riders.

Rather than turning left at the fingerpost to head back to the trail centre, turn right here, following the signs for the longer Fort Trail. Climb a little, gradually, hugging the top of Sutton Bank with marvellous views to your left. The track, which also forms part of the Cleveland Way, is grassy, so can get pretty squelchy when it’s been raining a lot.

Soon, you turn left for a fantastic singletrack descent, zig-zagging across the hillside to make the most of it. This finishes at the fire road, where you start to winch yourself back up the bank, heading south and into Town’s Pasture Wood.

The start is the steepest, and there’s a brief respite after crossing another track, where you descend a little, before the final slog up to rejoin the shorter Fort Trail at the fingerpost viewpoint.

Sutton Bank Bikes Shop & Bike Wash

Highlight • Rest Area

Great shop located at the visitor centre for the Sutton Bank bike trails, where you'll also find a cafe, toilets and parking.

Managed to slip me in for a quick brake bleed when I got to the top and realised my front brake was a bit spongy.

Very helpful staff and a great variety of products/bikes.

A great stretch of cycle trail that's well surfaced around the margin of the field, adjacent to the road. This forms part of the Sutton Bank Fort and Paradise trails, rated blue and red respectively.

Look out for wildlife as you pass by the fields; I was joined by two partridges as I rode along this track.

Sutton Bank Climb

Highlight • Climb

On the red-rated Paradise Trail and longer blue Fort Trail, this pedal up gets you back up onto the top of Sutton Bank to finish off back at the National Park Centre.

Make sure you leave some energy in the tank, as it's not a small climb, though it does make good use of the hill and switchbacks so it's not too brutal.

The first section from the lane (on Paradise Trail) is on a wide gravel doubletrack, and further up it turns into a non-technical singletrack. Pace yourself!

High on Whitestone Cliff, on part of the classic Cleveland Way trail, you are rewarded with spectacular views over Gormire Lake and miles beyond. If you are exploring Garbutt Wood Nature Reserve and the lake from below, it's worth a stroll to the cliff tops for the views. You won’t regret it.

The final section of the Paradise and Fort trails from Sutton Bank leads you through Cliff Plantation. It's a twisty single track trail, though not technical and well surfaced, leading right to the car park.
