Grouin Point

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Pointe du Grouin is the wild coast north of Cancale. There is a very strong sea current that can be seen firsthand.

Dominated by a semaphore built in 1861, it offers a remarkable view over the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and the Channel coasts to the east, and over a succession of coves and points to Cap Fréhel in the 'Where is.

Very nice section of the GR34 (Zöllnerweg). We have integrated it in June 2019 in a varied circular walk (komoot.de/tour/75253376). The path is relatively easy to walk. But I always recommend sturdy shoes.

The landscape is wild and windswept, featuring dramatic cliffs that plunge into the sea.

What are the main points of interest along the Pointe du Grouin Loop?

The route is rich with notable features. You'll pass by the historic 1861 semaphore, which once monitored ship passages and now hosts exhibitions. Where can I park for the Pointe du Grouin Loop trail?

Parking is typically available near the trailhead at Pointe du Grouin. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking can fill up quickly.

Is the Pointe du Grouin Loop dog-friendly?

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and early autumn often offer the most pleasant conditions. During these seasons, the weather is typically mild, and the coastal flora, such as sea thrift and blue bonnets, is in bloom, adding to the scenic beauty. Summer can be busy, and winter can be windy.

What kind of wildlife and plants can I see along the way?

The landscape also boasts diverse flora, including flowering meadows and unique cliff-edge vegetation like sea thrift, English stonecrop, blue bonnets, wild carrot, and navelwort.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route incorporates significant sections of the 'La pointe du Grouin' trail (98% of the route) and also passes through parts of the 'Chemin des Douaniers, Saint-Méloir-des-Ondes - La Rance' (72% of the route). You'll also find smaller segments of 'Le grand tour de Cancale' and 'Cancale - circuit de Port-Briac'.

What should I wear or bring for this hike?

Is the Pointe du Grouin Loop suitable for families with children?

While the trail is moderate, some sections of the GR34 can be rocky with steep gradients. Families with younger children or those less accustomed to hiking might find parts challenging. Very nice walk without difficulty. Very beautiful viewpoints.

You can take the bus from Saint Malo or Cancale to Port Mer. The hike starts at the beach and leads directly onto the coastal path. Passing remnants from the Second World War, you reach the steep coastline to Pointe du Grouin. The trail continues past coves and beaches to Pointe du Nid. You can then board the bus again in the town of Le Verger. Komoot also offers a 15km circular route. Since it's constantly up and down and the path is rocky in places, the 10km were enough for me. The path along the coast is highly recommended.

A few days in Brittany are on the agenda. Our hostess names the Pointe du Grouin as a worthwhile destination. A nice hike leads along a steep rocky coast and past the bird sanctuary of Île des Landes. Beautiful bays and sandy beaches invite you to swim. After the first beach stop, I set off and completed the round trip alone.
