The MIUT 16 is the shortest race offered by the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail. Overall it does not involve any particular difficulty and its route enchants lovers of wide open spaces and horizons.

The start starts from the seafront of Porto da Cruz. This magnificent village nestled at the foot of an impressive hill offers a large opening onto the Atlantic Ocean. The first kilometers are flat, skirting the coast towards the east.

You then gradually gain height thanks to a few steps. Quickly, a beautiful view of the village presents itself when you turn around. You stroll on a beautiful levada (irrigation channel) which winds on the sides of a valley.

At the end of your main ascent, the spectacle is grandiose. The Espigão Amarelo, which means "yellow tip" in Portuguese, reveals a spectacular view. Huge cliffs plunge into an ocean that seems to be bottomless. You embark on one of the most beautiful trails on the island. Flat but vertiginous, the path on the side of the cliffs is at times very impressive.

A few kilometers further, you leave this extraordinary balcony to dive into the Machico Valley. You find several levadas that guide you quietly to your final destination. As you approach, the village of Machico reveals itself to you. At the cost of a last slightly steep descent, you have arrived on one of the two fine sandy beaches of the island.

Beautiful village on the island of Madeira. At the foot of the Penha d'Aguia, it is nestled between the cliffs and the mountains. This is one of the common crossing points for all MIUT race formats.

Yellow Ridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

Suddenly you are in front of the 400 m steep cliff coast and looks down on the deep blue sea. We saw in the depths in the most impossible places cultivated terraced fields, which could be reached only by extraordinarily adventurous lifts. Unforgettable.

Levada do Canical

Highlight • Trail

Madeira's levadas are a true masterpiece of ancient engineering. Created in the 15th century, these stone veins capture water from the humid mountains and carry it, kilometer after kilometer, to the island's drier fields. There are over 2,200 km of canals and 40 km of hand-dug tunnels, many of them in terrain so steep that workers had to be suspended by ropes. It was an epic effort to tame the water and make it flow where it was most needed.

The Levada do Caniçal is a beautiful example of this ingenuity and also offers an incredible view of Machico.

Machico Beach

Highlight • Beach

Machico Bay combines history and beauty in a single setting. It was here that the first sailors arrived in Madeira in 1419. Surrounded by verdant mountains that slope gently down to the sea, it boasts a pebble beach and another with golden sand brought from Morocco (a rarity on the island). The marina and small pier add a cosmopolitan touch to this natural amphitheater carved between green and blue.
