Running

This difficult ring run takes you from Passo dell'Incisa to Monte Penna, covering 2.3 miles (3.6 km) with a significant 781 feet (238 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking about 42 minutes for jogging. You will encounter varied terrain, from more accessible forest roads to rocky ascents as you climb towards Monte Penna. The route winds through dense beech and fir forests, offering glimpses of the picturesque Lago del Penna, a small glacial lake nestled among the trees. From the summit of Monte Penna, you can enjoy extraordinary 360-degree panoramic views that, on clear days, extend all the way to the Ligurian Sea.

This trail is considered difficult, especially for jogging, due to its challenging nature and significant elevation changes. Some sections may be technical or hazardous, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. You should wear robust footwear and be prepared for mountainous terrain. Prior experience and specialist equipment might be necessary for certain parts of the route.

Monte Penna, at 1735 meters, is a significant peak in the Ligurian Apennines, known for its expansive views and a statue of the Madonna. The trail also passes Passo dell'Incisa, a crucial crossing point of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, whose name is said to derive from the Romans felling forests. Keep an eye out for the unique "Nave del Penna," a conical glacial formation resembling a ship's hull on the north side of the mountain.

Incisa Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Crossing point of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri and starting point for excursions to the Penna and Aiona mountains.
The history of this place seems to be linked to the Latin term "incido," which means "cut." It is said that the Romans, tired of the resistance of the Ligurian tribes, decided to cut down the Apennine forests to weaken them. The Ligurians were masters of guerrilla warfare, while the Romans preferred the open field, and the removal of trees would have facilitated their strategy.

Monte Penna is a relief of the Ligurian Apennines (1735 m s.l.m.) included in the territory of the Aveto Natural Park. The northern side shows a very steep slope of bare basalt rock, while the southern one, surrounded by the Penna State Forest, appears softer and more luxuriant. The mountain overlooks the Valle del Ceno and that of the Taro, whose rivers flow from its slopes.

The summit, located on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Liguria, houses a statue of the Madonna enthroned, facing the Val di Taro and the town of Alpe, because it was carried by its inhabitants as a devotional sign, as well as a stone chapel, with the entrance to Liguria. Worthy of note are the panoramic views (almost devoid of signs of anthropization) with a panorama that sweeps 360 degrees up to the Ligurian Sea. The ancients believed it was the seat of the Celtic divinity Penn, from which it takes its name.

The top can be reached via an easy path (871) which starts from the Passo dell'Incisa. The east side that comes from Monte Trevine is more difficult, where the passages on the rock are facilitated by chains.

Lago del Penna

Highlight • Lake

Lago del Penna is a small lake located at the foot of the north face of Monte Penna. It is located at 1470 m.s.l.m., in a small basin of glacial origin surrounded by thick forests of beech and spruce trees. Its waters, generally clear, reflect the surrounding forest and, in a suggestive way, the peaks of the Penna and the Pennino. It is fed by a perennial stream that flows a few meters above and enters the lake at the southern shore. The maximum depth is about 1 and a half meters, while the average depth is around 50 cm. Regarding the marshy vegetation, in the central sector a settlement of Potamogeton natans can be seen.

Lake Penna is not only a landscape jewel, but also of great naturalistic value: it hosts a very rich population of amphibians (such as mountain frogs and newts ...), for which it plays an irreplaceable role as a reproductive site. To protect the aquatic habitats found there, in 2020 the area was classified as an "Integral Reserve" and equipped with a chestnut fence that is forbidden to cross.
