Fantastically beautiful! At least in late June, early July traffic was not a problem in the morning (before 10am) and in the evening (after 7pm).

If you want to go up without a bike, you can also take a call bus. They start in mid-June, cost 10 euros per seat, pick you up at the hotel around 9 a.m. and drive down again at 4 p.m.

Small cheese dairy with snack bar at the top of the Restonica valley. Their goats and sheep roam freely around the area. In the afternoon you can watch cheeses. Do not always open in low season and no contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current accessibility status of the road cycling route to the Restonica Valley?

Due to storm damage from November 2023, the RD 623 road is currently closed to all vehicles, including bicycles, beyond Tuani or the Frassetta parking lot. The full traditional route to Bergeries de Grotelle is not completable by bike at this time. The road is scheduled to reopen on April 1, 2026.

Where can I park to access the route?

You can park at Tuani or the Frassetta parking lot, which is currently the furthest point accessible by vehicle on the route. Beyond this, the journey continues on foot.

What is the terrain and difficulty like for this racebike route?

This is considered a difficult racebike route, requiring very good fitness. The terrain features a short but steep climb, with an average outward gradient of about 5%. Be prepared for segments between kilometers 4 and 15 with an average gradient of 8%, and a particularly challenging half-kilometer stretch at the 10km mark that reaches a steep 14%. The road is mostly well-paved but narrow and winding.

What can I see along the route to the Restonica Valley?

The route offers spectacularly beautiful scenery, following the Restonica River through a forested canyon. You'll see dramatic mountains, giant rock walls, crystal-clear river pools, and wooded hills with pine trees. The views of the surrounding valleys and peaks are a major highlight of the Restonica Valley.

Is the Restonica Valley route dog-friendly?

While the initial sections of the road are accessible, the Restonica Valley is part of the Réserve Naturelle du Massif du Monte Rotondo. Dogs are generally allowed on leash on roads and designated trails, but always check specific regulations for the natural reserve, especially if you plan to venture onto hiking paths beyond the road.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for the Réserve Naturelle du Massif du Monte Rotondo?

There is no specific entrance fee to cycle the road into the Restonica Valley. However, as it's within the Réserve Naturelle du Massif du Monte Rotondo, visitors are expected to respect environmental regulations, such as staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and packing out all trash. Specific permits might be required for certain activities or access to sensitive areas, but not typically for road cycling.

What is the best time of year to cycle this route?

The best time to cycle this route is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October) when the weather is most favorable. However, be aware of the current road closure until April 1, 2026. Outside of summer, some facilities might be closed, and weather can be unpredictable, especially at higher elevations.

Are there any opportunities for swimming along the route?

Yes, the Restonica River, which runs alongside the route, has several crystal-clear pools where cyclists can enjoy a refreshing swim on their return trip, especially during warmer months.

Does this route intersect with other well-known trails?

Yes, this route shares sections with several official trails. You'll find it intersecting with parts of the Route de la Restonica, Liaison Mare à Mare Nord et Variante, GT20 / Étape 9 : Corti - Ghisoni, and the Sentier du Patrimoine de Corte.

What should I bring for this challenging racebike ride?

Given the difficult nature of this ride, you should bring plenty of water, energy snacks, appropriate cycling gear, sun protection, and basic repair tools. A helmet is essential. Due to the winding roads and potential for traffic, reflective clothing is also advisable. Remember that the full route is currently not accessible by bike beyond Tuani.

A must visit place in Corsica. I left my gear at the campsite to climb lighter. I did well because the hill is steep. I put my bike down at the sheepfold to continue on foot to Lac de Melo.
