Due to Briançon's strategic location on the border of Italy, several fortresses have been built over the centuries to protect the city against invaders. These forts are part of the "Forts de l'Esseillon", a series of fortifications from the 18th and 19th centuries to guard the border with Italy.

Hi @Simon Rosmolen I plan to do a gravel ride soon inspired by this route. Can I cycle the route the other way around? So I would leave from Briancon towards Izoard and reach Fort Janus via Col des Gondrans. Then descend towards Montgenevre. Can this descent be done with a gravel bike? I ride with 40mm tires.
