Hiking

Embark on a moderate hike through the Peak District National Park with the Stanage & Higger Tor loop from Hathersage. This 6.9-mile (11.2 km) route features a diverse landscape, from paths through fields and woodlands to open moorland with rocky gritstone outcrops. You will gain about 1079 feet (329 metres) in elevation over approximately 3 hours and 19 minutes, encountering varied terrain that includes rocky sections and potentially boggy ground after rain. From Stanage Edge, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Hope and Derwent Valleys, while Higger Tor offers impressive vistas over the Burbage Valley.

Starting from Hathersage, a village with amenities like pubs and cafes, this trail requires a good level of fitness due to its challenging sections and significant elevation changes. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended for the uneven and rocky ground. While the trail is accessible year-round, be prepared for potentially slippery conditions on rocky paths and boggy areas, especially after wet weather.

This loop is notable for its iconic gritstone escarpment, Stanage Edge, a popular spot for climbers and a filming location for "Pride & Prejudice." You will also pass the distinctive Higger Tor, known for its 360-degree views and interesting rock formations. The route also offers glimpses of the tranquil Padley Gorge and the ancient Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark, adding historical and natural interest to your journey.

Hathersage Village

Highlight • Historical Site

The large village of Hathersage has long been a favourite of outdoor lovers. It's right in the heart of things as far as the Dark Peak goes. The iconic gritstone of Stanage Edge watches on to the north east, beloved of climbers and hikers alike. Other superb objectives within hiking distance of the village are the atmospheric Higger Tor and the ancient hill fort of Carl Wark.

The village itself is rich in ancient, industrial and literary history and has its fair share of folklore. Supposedly, the village churchyard is home to the grave of Little John of Robin Hood fame and the village has links with Charlotte Bronte and her classic novel Jane Eyre.

So, it's no surprise Hathersage is popular. There are plenty of amenities for walkers, including excellent pubs, cafes, restaurants and outdoor gear shops. Accommodation is also in good supply and it's only 18 minutes from Sheffield by train.

Stanage Edge

Highlight • Natural Monument

Stanage Edge is an awesome gritstone escarpment standing high above Hathersage in the Peak District National Park.

It's a very popular climbing destination with hundreds of routes up the steep, slabby and sometimes overhanging cliffs. If you walk along the top, you're likely to meet climbers and if you walk along the rougher path below the cliff you can watch them.

The trail along the top of the edge is well made and offers a few miles of excellent walking with great views. There is a trig point at White Path Moss at the eastern end and another slightly higher at High Neb to the west.

White Path Moss Trig Point

Highlight • Natural Monument

White Path Moss has great views over the valleys and boulders in the ferns. It can get quite windy indeed at the ledge, but climbing down a few metres or getting further off the plateau often helps quite a bit.

Highlight • Climb

Higger Tor is a distinctive landmark of the Dark Peak. Standing at 1,424 feet (434 m) high, you are afforded spectacular panoramic views from the summit, that stretch over the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort, Carl Wark.

March 4, 2023, Komoot workshop and community hike at SHAFF - Peak District

Another fabulous @komoot community hike - this time in the Peak District as part of Sheffield Adventure Film Festival! @Grace and I led a komoot workshop in the Alpkit store in Hathersage in the morning and then we all went for a lovely walk afterwards.
