Hiking

Rising high above the beautiful town of Pitlochry, Ben Vrackie is a popular and prominent objective that affords spellbinding views across its surroundings. Despite being a Corbett, its mix of accessibility and charm mean that it’s climbed more often than even most Munros.

This hike starts from Pitlochry train station, and heads north through the town to the village of Moulin. Follow Baledmund Road north and pick up a path through woodland. Eventually, you break out onto heather moorland, with the summit of Ben Vrackie now seen enticingly ahead. Ascend to Loch a’ Choire, which nestles below Ben Vrackie’s rugged, scree-covered southern flanks and is a good spot for a bite to eat before the final ascent.

The climb takes you to the right of the mountain’s steep battlements, before arcing around to claim the top. A viewfinder allows you to confidently name the distant peaks, with the Cairngorms looking particularly resplendent on a clear day. Return to Loch a’ Choire and skirt its northeastern shore, before venturing west through often squelchy heather moorland.

For a shorter hike, you could head south to return on the path you came up on, otherwise begin the long, lazily zigzagging descent to the River Garry and the Pass of Killiecrankie, a lovely wooded gorge. There’s a short detour to Soldier’s Leap, where it’s reported that a government soldier, Donald McBane, jumped across the river to escape capture by the Jacobites during the 1689 Battle of Killiecrankie.

Expect rich colours in autumn along this section, when the woodland is arguably at its best. The path follows the riverbank all the way to its confluence with the River Tummel. Continue along the Tummel, arc around Dunmore Hill and Faskally Woods and arrive back into Pitlochry. Here, find plenty of places to refuel after your adventure.

Loch a' Choire

Highlight • Natural

Loch a' Choire is a small mountain loch with great views and a nice path around it. The lochan is a nice quiet spot to relax. It's well placed just below the steep final summit push up to Ben Vrackie.

Ben Vrackie summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ben Vrackie, at 2,759 feet (841 m), is classified as a Corbett. It's significantly higher than the surrounding hills so you get great views, especially north into the Cairngorms and west down Loch Tummel. Most people walk it via the path from Pitlochry to the south. It's a great walk with between 2,000 and 2,600 feet (600 - 800 m) of ascent.

Bealach na Searmoin Pass

Highlight • Viewpoint

Normally reached by deviating from the traditional path up Ben Vrackie, the trail over this bealach – or up to the smaller Meall na h-Aodainn Moire, at 2,077 feet (633m) – can take you away from the people climbing the more popular peak and offer great views down Glen Garry. It's a nice detour, well worth the slight extra distance.

Soldier's Leap

Highlight • Historical Site

It's said that, during the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, government soldier Donald McBane successfully jumped across the river at this spot to escape pursuing Jacobites. This would have been an impressive feat, as the gorge is 18.5 feet (5.5 m) at this point. It's a great spot to visit on a hike, both for the rushing River Garry and to imagine McBane's great jump.

Trail Reviews

Lucie
May 31, 2023, Loch a' Choire – Ben Vrackie - Bealach Path Runde von Pitlochry

The tour may be long and high, but not difficult. The first nine kilometers are very relaxed, first along Loch Faskally, then along the raging River Garry. After the ninth kilometer the slight climb begins through open moorland and heathland to the loch of Loch Choire, then along the loch to the actual climb to Ben Vrackie. The path is steep and difficult, but predetermined and easily recognizable by some sort of rock steps. One cannot get lost. From the summit, in good weather conditions, one could enjoy wonderful views over the Scottish Highlands. Unfortunately, this is not the case on this tour, dense fog clouds passed at this height, which greatly restricted the view, although the weather was very friendly. The return journey was along the same trail and further on the footpath through the moorland back to Pitlochry.
