Mountains with vertical walls and flat tops are often called "fortresses". The Chipude Fortress is a precious example reminiscent of the Venezuelan tepuis on the other side of the ocean.

What can I see along the route?

You'll experience the unique Laurisilva (laurel) Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, often shrouded in mist. The highlight is reaching Alto de Garajonay, the highest point on La Gomera, which offers spectacular 360-degree views. Trail Reviews

Gerd
March 14, 2026, Gomera: Rundtour Garajonay, Ruta 17

Today, on the way to San Sebastian, we did a short hike around and up Garajonay. Unfortunately, there were no distant views. But the vegetation along the trail is always lovely. Despite the less than ideal weather, there were quite a few hikers out. Parking spaces were scarce.

Then we headed to the highest mountain on La Gomera. In the distance, the snow-covered peak of the Teide volcano on Tenerife can still be seen in the sandstorm. What a fantastic view over the whole island. Once again, I can't believe the altitude. It must have been more than 130m of ascent.

Again, everything turned out differently than planned. On the approach to our hike, the Alto de Garajonay suddenly caught my eye. I noticed that he was completely free. Hardly a cloud in the sky. I would not have expected that. Paused briefly and changed destination. A gap for the small vehicle was quickly found. On the track, I quickly realized that I was being misled by the day before and the 15 degrees on the car thermometer. It was easier this time. Just quickly undressed something and we went on. It wasn't difficult to climb the Alto de Garajonay, the highest mountain on the island at 1483 m. The magnificent view was definitely great. An easy and at the same time beautiful hike on La Gomera.

An easy tour for experienced and fit riders. Right at the beginning, the first kilometer or so is a tough climb. Then a leisurely stroll back to the start. Even if many people laugh now, the climb was a real challenge for me. Slowly but surely, I managed it. So I have to plan tours accordingly. The important thing is that I'm having fun again, and hopefully that will get me back on track. 🤗🥰💪

I was also on the highest mountain of Gomera, the Garajonay, when the weather was nice. It was really worth it, but it was only a small round - no comparison to the "first ascent" in bad weather.

Unfortunately there is very little shade on the tour

I could well imagine this little hike the other way around.

Great hike up La Gomera's local mountain with a view of Tenerife's El Teide
