Running

This difficult trail running route takes you deep into the ancient, dense beech and oak forests of the Umbra Forest in the Sfilzi Integral Natural Reserve. You will navigate varied topography within a karst geology, enjoying the consistently cool and shady atmosphere created by the thick canopy. The 9.4 miles (15.2 km) ring tour features 1413 feet (431 metres) of elevation gain and is estimated to take around 2 hours and 1 minute to complete, demanding a very good fitness level.

Because of the challenging terrain, you should wear sturdy shoes and be sure-footed. It is also wise to carry adequate food and water for the duration of your run. Before you head out, make sure to check the weather conditions, as some sections can become slippery when muddy. Be aware that mobile reception might be poor in certain areas of the reserve.

The Umbra Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its ecological significance and ancient beech forests. It was even named one of the 10 most beautiful forests in the world in 2022. As you jog, you will experience rich biodiversity, including various flora like holly and ferns, and might spot local fauna such as deer, though encountering wild boar is not advised.

Trail in the Foresta Umbra

Highlight • Trail

Path among the trees of the Umbrian forest. The name of the forest derives from "shadow" due to the particular protection from the sun guaranteed by the dense vegetation.

Sfilzi Fountain

Highlight • Natural Monument

The fountain itself is within the boundaries of the natural reserve, for which the access is restricted.
Nonetheless the walk from the "Sfilzi" shelter up to the fork to "Caritate" is really nice and easygoing. The return is slightly uphill, but nothing too hard.
