Calderón Hondo Crater

Highlight (Segment) • Volcano

Calderón Hondo belongs to the Montaña Colorada - Bayuyo volcano series, which consists of nine volcanic cauldrons. Due to the volcanic activity of this area and the volcanic assemblage in the north, the island of Fuerteventura once gained an area of approx. 110 km² in the north.
The Calderón Hondo was characterized by its explosive volcanic activity. Its bowl-shaped crater is 70 m deep and connected to the Montaña Colorada mountain on the north-eastern side.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The trail primarily follows easy dirt tracks and paths made of volcanic rock and gravel. While mostly flat, there's a gentle climb towards the volcano, with some parts becoming slightly steeper as you approach the crater's edge. You'll also pass through areas of 'malpaís' (volcanic badlands) and old dry stone walls.

What can I see along the route?

The main highlight is the perfectly circular, 70-meter-deep Calderón Hondo Crater. From its viewpoint, you'll get panoramic vistas across northern Fuerteventura, including lava fields, the ocean, and on clear days, the islands of Lanzarote and Lobos. You'll also pass by Montaña Colorada.

At the beginning I thought it would be a leisurely hike. But we quickly realized that it was going to be a very stormy affair. On Mount Colorada, which is in front of the caldera, there were pretty strong squalls. My cap quickly disappeared into the backpack. I had to stand properly against the wind so that I wasn't pushed away while walking. Same at Caldera Hondo. Therefore, I didn't walk around the entire crater, but just up to the platform and down there back to the car. In the evening we found out that there was a silent warning for Fuerteventura ;).

Tip🤔! Start the tour before 11am. It gets crowded later. Take water with you for the many Atlas squirrels you encounter towards the crater. On the viewing platform there is a Cazzuella on the left. The animals are happy about the refreshment.

Beautiful circular hike to the volcano from Lajares. Highly recommended.

a not entirely harmless hike to the extinct volcano, you should be particularly careful on the part of the way at the edge of the crater, there 2 hours after my stay a woman fell into the crater and had to be rescued with a rescue helicopter.

So we were on the road at 3:15 without a break. Unfortunately, Komoot often gets stuck and the mobile phone has to be restarted. The tour itself was incredibly beautiful. We've never circumnavigated a caldera before. The view to Lanzerote was fantastic. Gigantic beautiful. As always, the photos don't even come close to doing the views justice. .

The ascent is not without it. Sometimes there is no real path to be seen and you look for the best places to put your feet on the rough rock. The view in all directions then rewards all efforts. Both in the crater and in the wider area. Depending on the view, Lanzarote can be seen. We climbed in strong winds. At the edge you had the feeling of finding a secure hold so as not to be blown into the crater. The tour at the foot of the volcano is easy to walk on.
